In an interview, I'd say : "yeah, we get a few calls about Mike.... he's one of our best players. However, we are a rebuilding team, nobody is untouchable"
Johnny : "yeah, we get some calls..... he's one of the best players in the NCAA. But, we have a plan for him and there is a great opportunity here when he is ready to come to Calgary"
Lecavlier : "I don't make it my business to talk about other team's players who are under contract. If Lecavlier gets bought out, there will be a lot of teams interested in him."

Feaster should hire you to do the press conference. I like it.

You're getting hung up on sunk costs here. The question is not, 'Can we get more for Gaudreau than the draft pick we used to acquire him?' The question is, 'Can we get assets for Gaudreau that will help us on the ice more than having Gaudreau in the lineup?'
On that basis, it's very easy for them to lose. If they trade Gaudreau for more picks, and Gaudreau pans out but the picks don't, they lose.

All NA players including CHL players can pull a "Schultz" But there was a difference in what happened with Schultz, and there is a difference between all College kids and CHL kids.
For CHL kids if they hold out long enough they can become UFA's. But they would be left without a place to play for 1 season. they would have to go to Euro leagues of Candian Colleges.
For most NCAA kids if they hold out, they become free agents in mid August (well after all the free agents are gone, the money is spent, and the rosters are full).
For Schultz, he played 1 year of High School after being drafted then, 4 years of College. So in AHL terms he had been a UFA since the August before his final year of school. This left him in a unique situtation, as soon as the College season ended he was able to auction off his services before free agencty had even opened.
Both Jankowski and Gaudreau had intended on going the Schultz high school route, and the Flames talked both of them out of it. For them worst case senario would be a Knight situation. Where we would likely recoup a reasonable draft pick in return, if it becomes appearent they are not signing here.

What, if anything would suggest that Gaudreau is not going to sign with the Flames?
It's not like he has the ability to do that while still playing in NCAA.
I see a lot of speculation, but has there been any real warning signs that he may not sign?

I wasn't suggesting it was the worry of the team. Clearly it's the fanbase, though it probably does play into the mind of the Flames management.
Personally, I don't think he'll ever play here.

Interesting opinion. May I ask why? Do you think he will be traded as an asset or do you have the opinion that he will force the Flames hand in moving him much like Knight did to the Panthers? It's my belief that agents are starting to become very active in planting seeds as this is starting to become all the more common.

I have the feeling that he is going to do the four years at BC and then not sign with the Flames. No hard evidence to suggest it, just a gut feeling I get with him that he will become a free agent and sign on the east coast USA.
I also get this feeling from Agostino as well.

Nothing I have seen would indicate there's any threat. It's just random Internet speculation.

Based on the interview I heard with Agostino (and that's all I have to go on) I would think that's very unlikely.

People don't seem to realize that Schultz was the exception, not the rule.
Not every good NCAA prospect is going to spurn the team that drafted them so they can have GM's line up like some twisted hockey version of the Bachelorette.

I got the sinking feeling about Johnny after listening to the guys on the Fan talk about him a few months back. Their impression of him, after talking to him about the Hobey Baker, was that he was surprised anyone from Calgary had even heard about him, or that we followed his progress in any way. And then of course they brought up the Schultz situation. I guess that sparked a fear in me, rational or not.

Has anyone here stated that it's the rule? I think everyone realizes it's a possibility that is all.

Yes if it meant getting Barkov or even Douin. I don't believe that would be enough for the Predators.

Everyone is always quick to react and take the negative tone in these situations. Winning the Hobey Baker is different then going into the corner against an NHL caliber defenceman every game. I think Johnny knows he could use another year of adding some size and strength to his game and taking his first shot in the league as a 20yr old.
Where would we be in 2-3 years if Johnny goes out and gets injured a few times and plays less than 50-80 games over that stretch. RNH and these smaller types would be much better served to come into the league as a 20yr old. Very few kids that are 18-19 do much but fail to meet expectations and ride the pine and play less than 10mins per game.
Worst case we get a top 5 pick next year and these new kids help us out in a year or two. We are not going to win the cup in the 2013/14 season, we need to make ourselves a better team for 2016+, deal with it.

Feaster's comment was just an attempt to tell the fan-base that Gaudreau is highly sought-after... hey fans, a reason for hope - other teams keep asking about Gaudreau... aren't I a good GM?" kind of a thing
|
That's pretty much how I interpret Jay's comments as well. The draft and all the hype it generates is a platform for teams to generate spin and hope for teams and their fan bases.

Feaster declares he is open for business:
Quote:
'Open for business'
He said Calgary has “a lot of needs” including a top-six centre and is “open for business at a lot of different positions as we go into this draft.”
