Good grief Feaster better not blow this opportunity. Why I am so worried that he might not be in on this. I truly hope I am wrong but he does not fill me with any confidence at all, should never have been made GM, but I am more than ready to be proved wrong, get it done Feaster,
Also, if you have too many picks in one draft, you spread your scouting staff thin and don't seem to make as many good decisions.
Not sure what you mean here. Scouts would rather have more picks. You don't spread your staff thin by having more picks. The scouts make a list. By being able to pick more players on that list you have more chances at landing impact NHLers.
Do you have any data to support this conclusion you've drawn? Sounds like a load of hogwash to me.

Chris Johnston @reporterchris32m@mirtle Shero said today that the price for rental defenceman has clearly been set at two seconds based off the last couple years.
Flames can and should stock up on 2nd round draft picks for years to come.

Yup. Two of Sarich, Babchuk, Butler, or Smith should be moved.

Is Babchuk the only ufa dman the Flames have? Can't see him garnering a 2nd, I'd be shocked if Feaster pulled that off.
I think Sarich has another year after this.

Three if you can.
I don't think any of those players mentioned in your post could get a 2nd round pick. Butler might be able to get a 3rd but that's about it. Smith a 5th, Sarich maybe a 7th, and Anton will get you 0.
I thought that of Jokinen's NTC last year as well. I am sure someone on the Flames has that type of NTC. Could very well be Babs
Yeah, I think a lot of us thought that about Jokinen but after the fact I think it was mentioned he still had the NMC on deadline day.

Babchuk has a window to be traded I believe ON deadline day.
Can't see any takers though.
Sounds about right and you're probably correct about no takers either.
Didn't know that about Sarich's though, that's such a weird one.

I just meant in general, trading them off for things. Not 2nds but.. anything. Wouldn't shock me to see Babchuk get a late round pick. Teams on deadline day will just want some depth any depth.
After last playoffs this seems like a no-brainer. They needed a defense presence that series and maybe more importantly a player who was willing to battle the Flyers without crossing the line and being suspended. A bottom pairing defensemen that's going to throw his body around, clear the crease and slow the game down is exactly what they should have been looking for to try and neutralize the Big Bad Bruins if they meet them. And really against any team it's likely stopping goals and not scoring them that will be the Penguins downfall if they don't win it all.
Giving up what very likely could end up being the 61st pick (because of WPG) and a future pick should easily end up being worth it.

Look for situations on hockeydb where teams have a ton of picks in any particular year - almost invariably, little comes of it.
An example from memory is Chicago the year they drafted Toews - I think they had 6 picks in the top 100 and other than Toews (who was a slam dunk lottery pick) they got nothing else out of it. If you look, you will find that happens surpsisingly often.
What I mean by spreading the scouting staff thin is that they will follow certain players that tehy are interested in. They can only handle so many. And with a whole bunch of extra picks, teams will end up making selections without having done their due diligence.
Keep in mind, I am not talking about 1 or 2 extra picks, I am talking about multiple extra picks. IT can become a waste.
