The Deerfoot needs an elevated lrt that runs along it and into downtown. There should only be one station at crossiron mills and another at around 22x (maybe seton). Commute time to downtown would likely be around six minutes since the lrt could travel about 150 km/h, there are no stops.
It would only operate during peak hours to minimize costs and be profitable. There should be more cars per train, say 7 or 8 to lower how often they leave the station.
Satellite communites would have the option to build their own rapid transit to connect to it.
I don't have the numbers but I notice most lrt users always travel to the last few stations on each line. Hardly anyone gets out near downtown.
Having just two stations plus the one downtown would have low construction costs.
It wouldn't benefit communities closer to downtown but that wouldn't matter because there would be a huge decrease in traffic congestion. Commuting from those communities would become much easier. It also gives them the option of traveling against rush hour traffic to get to the station. Example would be from Douglasdale to Seton to catch the rapid lrt. At least they have a choice.
Doesn't mean there should be no SE lrt, but it would buy a bit of time to come up with proper financing.
How does this benefit people living downtown? It doesn't, and neither does the ring road.
The airport doesn't benefit people that don't travel, the west lrt doesn't benefit people in the east, the airport tunnel doesn't benefit people in the south......too bad it's part of city living, suck it up.
Not everybody wants to live downtown.

So then the people living in the ass end of the city can suck up their long commute. They knew they would have to commute when they decided to live there.

Lol. Let private enterprise build that.
Maybe those living near 22X can work at Imperial Oil.
In all seriousness, having a train come into downtown from outside the city would be good but it doesn't have to be and shouldn't be part of the C-train system.

Once you get past 16th ave, the best move is to change lanes to the far right lane and continue on past 32nd ave and then past mcknight in that lane. It's completely backwards.
Everyone thinks it's just hurry up & wait, when in reality there aren't any traffic lights all the way to Edmonton. There really isn't a reason to have stop & go traffic without an accident.
Deerfoot requires strategic navigation every time, especially at around 3:30pm onwards in both directions.
|
NOOO!! Don't tell people that secret!!
Seriously it makes no sense how the far left lane is always the slowest. It has no one merging on it and should have the most people merging out of it so they can get to the off ramps, yet it is always the slowest of the three-four lanes going NB.

This thread is one of the reasons I don't miss living in Calgary. I am 15 mins max door to door.

What about the far left lane becoming a HOV lane?

My thought is that they closely study deerfoot between airdrie and downtown, since it only takes 20 mins to make that drive.
While I am not a traffic engineer, it seems to me that if they were to put in some left hand merges at places like south land to southbound deer foot, it might alleviate the backlog at Anderson/bow bottom. However, left hand merges are not that common in Canada, and that particular one would likely cost billions to build.

It already is. People just sock it in and decide traffic will be bad. The province needs to build another one, or as I said earlier, contain access to Deerfoot a bit. Change the EB/WB to NB/SB traffic light timing or put in more yields.
Deerfoot's traffic flow simulation looks like a heart attack waiting to happen, like tons of veins pumping traffic into a giant clusterfata.
People driving this road shouldn't automatically assume it's going to be backed up at any time of day. Calgary drivers should be forced to drive Deerfoot for their test. Drivers who police the left lane should move over or receive death by stoning.
Many posters have valid points here.

Would cost north of $5 billion, and bring Deerfoot to a screeching halt in the 5 years it'd take to build that. We could build 3 more ring roads for the same price.

One law I would like to see adopted is no transport trucks in the left lane. I've seen three abreast so many times, and it is ridiculous how they jam things up. It's the law in Italy for example, on high speed limited access roads, and it keeps things moving.
Another law I like in Italy is no transports on the major motorways on Sundays.

I take Deerfoot during the work week and this happens all the time. Drives me nuts.

Left hand merges really mess up roads and are avoided at all costs for pretty much everything but HOV specific interchange ramps.
