I used to have a white german shepherd - he hardly ever barked. That was one dog that was truely at peace with the world and everyone in it. He was calm, easy going, and loved everyone. He lived to a ripe old age of 13 - which isn't bad for a shepherd.

Now, I have a Boston Terrier (terrorizer)- God, do I miss my white Shepherd

I had to deal with a crazy dog that destroyed half our yard that my brother decided to watch. It wouldnt shut up. I about kicked it's head in, we have our own dog, and it barely makes any sound. When people come home it barks, when it wants inside and no one is within sight of the door he barks.

He's a very good dog but our evil EVIL next door neighbours have threatened to call the bylaws on us a few times. No idea why.

We have a neighbor with a sheltie who barks everytime another dog goes down the path. So does my dog if she's outside (chocolate lab). So does our other neighbor's dog is he is outside (another sheltie). So do the two tiny yappy things across the back path and down a couple houses (yorkies maybe). Everytime we take our lab out for a walk, dogs in the backyards along the path bark. Whatever.

Our neighbor across the path though loves to scream from her window "shut that f'n dog up". Except she doesn't use "f'n" but rather the full word, often with a few other colorful adjectives added in.

Now, I have a 10 year old daughter and a 6 year old son and I don't appreciate them having to listen to her swear her damn head off while they are outside playing, just because she lives in a house that backs onto a greenspace with a path, and people enjoy walking their dogs down it. I mean it's not like they haven't heard the words before - I do watch Flames games afterall - but they don't need to hear it from strangers screamed from their windows.

I feel sorry for the lady having to listen to dogs bark all the time. I personally wouldn't swear like she does, but I think she's less in the wrong than all the dog owners. The dogs are inciting her to swear; her swears aren't inciting them to bark.

I don't really blame the lady, frankly. Dogs tend to bark, but there are ways to deal with that behavior. Defensive barking can be a useful trait, however, barking at everything that comes down the pathway - especially when there are dozens of innocuous people coming down the pathway - is not useful. Too many false positives and the nobody checks to see if the car alarm was actually triggered by a burglar, know what I'm saying?

But the only time it really barks is when someone comes right into our yard and he doesn't know them. UPS guys and kids running down the sidewalk don't bother him.

Chocolate labs are great aren't they? Mine can't drink from a bowl without slobbering and drooling all over the floor. Very un-lady like.

Yes, when we walk her she never makes a peep but the other dogs bark. When people walk down the path, nothing but when other dogs walk down the path, there is barking from those dogs that are outside in their yards. It's funny... the dogs on the path are quiet, the dogs in the yards are the ones making noise. Obviously a protective territory thing.
