I'm not discounting it, but a performance of that type is just not what I'm trying to locate here in terms of a movie I want to watch. There are far more of the "all time memorable great performance in a non-dominant role" throughout movie history, there are far fewer "Hi I'm the director I'm going to point a camera at you for the better part of 2 hours and the success or failure of this film as a piece of art will more or less depend entirely on what you do with this character" movies where someone knocks it out of the park.
EDIT: Your avatar just gave me a good idea to illustrate this: I think Ian McShane as Al Swearengen is arguably the best character ever put to screen on TV, but Deadwood is quintessentially a show driven by an ensemble cast - I'm looking more for a "Bryan Cranston as Walter White" type of performance, except in the film context.

Robert Redford in that movie where it's just him on a boat kind of fits the bill. I loved it.
Tom Hanks in Castaway I suppose too but I didn't much care for it.
