As long as we're dreaming for impossible scenarios, I hope ownership complete 180s on trying to manage this team. I hope that I haven't been right all along and what we're seeing is not just the same ol' calgary flames management style for the last 30 years but boy does it sure look like a duck and quack like a duck.

The 10th overall part is applied after the lottery. So yes we can

You know they’re rebuilding right? Of course the Flames have a lot of problems lol.

Is it? Why is their team only good now? Slavin is 30 but the rest of the group is young. They have very good prospects coming and most their guys are locked up. Seems very short sighted to say now is the time and the future isn't bright.
Tampa yes. Carolina no.

|
CP has a pretty long memory. It remembers how he quit on the team under Sutter. He looked terrible under Huska as well until Zary and Pospisil got called up and re-energized him. Similar to Coleman he stated that he wants to win and doesn't really want to be a part of a long rebuild.
He's also almost 35, and is often selfish with the puck, and is prone to the occasional lazy play defensively. As things stand, I don't see a path where he plays a key role on a cup winning CGY team.

After a year of telling them to work hard and push, I don’t want my gm going into the room of a playoff team and telling them nah they won’t win so he’s pulling the plug.
And what about other years when the team is making the playoffs a bit more comfortably but isn’t really a ‘contender’… do you still want Craig to sell valuable pieces because the team is very unlikely to win the cup?
That’s not how you get groups of people to work towards and outcome.
|
Guys, unfortunately you played hard but competing for the cup just isn't in the cards. Be proud of how you rallied at moments. The plan is still to build a cup contender, and while that might result in some hard outcomes for this group, that's the life of professional hockey. We appreciate the effort you put in and you almost made a Cinderella case, but the long term health of the club and franchise is most important to management. Cheers.

The pick is lottery protected. If the Flames were to move into the top 10 the pick doesn't move.

Why do you even bother replying to me Enoch? I know you have nothing useful to say about anything so don't read the replies, you only reply to snark at me, so what's the point?
Are you taking pleasure over this?
The flames are going to be stuck AGAIN in the mushy middle. None of this Conroy has a plan hogwash will work anymore. The plan is to keep his job by appeasing ownership and slashing his way to at least one playoff game no matter what.

They’re also professional athletes, which requires a very particular mindset to be success.
If you’ve never been in a highly competitive environment, it’s probably hard to understand.

I’m not sure about the age anymore, Conroy was looking at 30 year old defenceman just last week. I’m losing confidence in him.
|
Of course you're not going to think they're competitive when they've just gone 2-2-2 on a road trip against some of the best teams in the league and the only game you think is worth mentioning is the one where they played their worst. They also played really well against Tampa, were a post away from beating Dallas, and did beat Washington.

All non-playoff teams are draft lottery eligible - they just can't move up more than 10 spots.

How do they sell that to a team full of players who thought they were cup contenders? Flames were never a cup contending team.
If I'm a young flame, I'm pumped for new opportunities if a vet is moved, and I work hard because I'm in the NHL trying to earn a contract or spot on the roster.

I think players and management realize expiring contracts are a reality. The players under consideration now aren’t on expiring contracts.
And Craig made his case clear last year with expiring contracts.
He’s satisfied the example you gave.

Summary of real rumors: Flames likely to spend assets on trying to compete this year, unlikely to sell when prices are at all time highs.

Make that speech in the Buffalo locker room. Sounds like no one has told them that.
You ruin morale in a locker room, that sticks around longer than people here want to admit.

Go ahead and give us a lived example Pep.
Surely you have been in several highly competitive environments brandishing statements like this and not the basement dwelling toilet troll your post history suggests.

Actually no. It is 10 top lottery protected. So the pick moves after the lottery determines the final position. So if we were 11th and moved up into the top 10, then the Flames would retain that pick.

If the morale of this group is weak enough to be ruined by a trade deadline, then it's not strong enough to compete for the cup anyways.
