Maybe Hiller got a glove hand transplant in the off-season so we're keeping him?

LeBrun says the Flames kicked tires on Kessel at the draft but the talks fell through when the Leafs weren't willing to retain salary:

Food for thought: A source also told ESPN.com that the Calgary Flames kicked the tires on Kessel last week at the draft, but in their talks with the Leafs, Toronto didn’t want to retain any salary. The Leafs were willing to take on player(s) from Calgary to alleviate Kessel’s $8-million salary, but they were not willing to actually retain any of Kessel’s salary, the source said.

I’m willing to be proven wrong but I just can’t believe the Leafs will ever be successful in moving Kessel unless they retain at least some of his salary.

Well, they are now willing to retain 25% apparently from a rumor a few days ago. Maybe there is a bit of smoke there again.

Adding Kessel after adding Hamilton might just push the Flames to a top 3-5 team in the league next year. Leafs would have to eat $1.5M per at least

6 million a year Kessel is a hell of a lot better than 8 million Kessel.
The Hamilton/Kessel angle would be delicious.

So with Jones to SJ now. What teams are left looking for goalie upgrades? Ramo's going to definitely cash in tomorrow.

How many teams are still looking for goaltending though?

Who needs a goalie still? I'm thinking it's like a game of musical chairs and Ramo could actually get squeezed out with all of his potential suitors trading for other goalies. He could very well end up back with us with his options shrinking.

Yeah there are no clear cut potential #1 spots for Ramo right now. He is going to have to look at 1a/1b scenarios or backup scenarios.

Is he? Who is left?

Edmonton got a goalie
Dallas got a goalie
Carolina got a goalie
San Jose got a goalie
Buffalo got a goalie...

Kinda seems like the only team that needed a goalie and didn't get one is Calgary.

When I was little girl in Poland, we ALL had goalies! My sister had goalie, my cousin had goalie...so what's wrong with that?

Toronto? Bernier isn't signed yet although that won't be an issue. Reimer is replacable I would think.

Edmonton got Talbot
Anaheim got Khudobin (Gibson available?)
Stars got and signed Niemi
Canes got Lack
Sabres got Lehner
Wild signed Dubnyk

So if Gibson is available, which you have to think he is behind Andersen and Khudobin, he would definitely be top dog. Then you have the UFA's which I guess Ramo and Fasth at the top of that list, but neither are legit starters. Lehtonen may also be available? And we are also assuming Hiller is available. Definitely a lot more goalies than teams interested at this point. But in Calgary's case, 2 of those available goalies are ones they either had or have and aren't interested in, so that slims it down really to Fasth or Gibson.. lol.. easy choice there, but that price will be really high.

If Jones got a 2016 1st then Gibson is a 2016 1st ++

Something about Kessel just irks me if we get him at 6M. He's a great offensive player but he just doesn't feel like a player you win a cup with. I would personally rather take a wait-and-see approach and try to build from within or flip assets for another RW when opportunity presents itself. What does make him more palatable in the long term is that his NMC would be voided if he came here (I think) and he would be a lot easier to trade when the Leafs are paying a substantial part of his contract.

Looking at that cap hit, if a Kessel deal could be worked around Wideman and a draft pick, I think it could work. Not something I would do, as I think we are still a few years away from being a true contender, but perhaps worth considering.
