I dont know if it has to be all taxpayer contribution. You can get creative with ticket taxes and a share of parking. A deal is there.
There is really no bump in tourism for an Olympics. Any of you going to Pyongchang?
For Flames playoffs ganes in a new arena and entertainment district. Hell yeah.

That's the point, people would have voted the bridge down, yet now it is an iconic part of the city.

I voted yes. In one way I’m happy that we can stick it to the IOC, but I am still mad that Calgary will go back to the rock we have been hiding under for the last half a decade. Our sporting facilities will continue to crumble and we will continue falling further behind. This was one chance to get Quebec and Ontario to pay for some of our stuff but that is gone now. Honestly this city has lost its mojo for sure. There is no grand vision and there are no more dreamers who want to elevate this city. Let’s do everything for as cheap and boring as possible. When we do get cool things like the Peace Bridge and the library people cry until the cows come home.

This is a reflection of how Calgarians are feeling.
Pretty beat up, simply put. They’ve had the whole country turn their back on them and it’s been what, 5, 6 years of everybody telling Calgary that they can’t get projects done?
I think this was as much a message on the economy to all 3 levels of government as it was a vote to host the Olympics as silly as that sounds. People are legitimately in fear for their long term economic future and it’s been years, literally, of governments and people crapping all over Calgary.

It didn’t cost a billion dollars and support a corrupt organization screwing over our city.

The IOC doesn’t have billions to contribute. They make about 4.5 billion on a four year cycle and spend 900 million on the winter games which represent about 20% of the athletes. The only question would be could you get more in cash and less in services and are those services provided really necessary. But from a high level the IOC doesn’t have an extra billion to cover the games complete OPEX.

If this went to vote 5 years ago when the economy was good I think it goes forward.

No, the Flames are on their own. It was always about the olympics. You have to look past the charades. These bids and proposals timing were not a coincidence. Now that the city voted no, the deal is dead.

Yes that’s them. I’d vote to funnel that money to a new stadium or MacMahan in a second. Just imagine the same photo ops you could have to represent the city.

For that two week bump yes.
But not after that.
An entertainment district would be better.

Of this whole process, I was really disappointed by Nenshi continuing to make the laughable 10 to 1 return on investment claims to the end as part of his public sell job. It's pretty sad to see such a transparent falsehood being peddled by our mayor.
