I think you could probably sign Russell long-term at a decent rate too. He would an excellent 3rd pair guy.
At worst half of our defense is set for next few years; its the upper half. The lower half won't be hard to complete.
Hickey - Huge potential here, still my fav D prospect
Kylington - Enough said about him, Boom or Bust
Rafikov - Unknown to other teams, top 4 ceiling
Andersson - Fix his fitness issues and what a player he can be
Wotherspoon - Our former best D prospect, hopefully he can crack the lineup this year
Morrisson - He was exciting to watch in the AHL, at worst a bottom pairing guy
Culkin & Kulak - Which one is which? I always mix the two, who was injured last year?
Kanzig & Bruce - Big projects, who knows
Seiloff - If he can put together a healthy season we'll talk about him again
Cundari & Gilmour - Least excited about these two

So with how confident management is in getting a deal done, should we be worried if he isn't signed by July 1st? It would be nice not to give anyone a chance to sign him to an offer sheet

Thus far Hamilton has had durability issues and is potentially asking for a pretty hefty sum.
Don't get me wrong he has huge upside and his age is exactly what the Flames should be after. If Hamilton does turn out who isn't excited about a core of Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennet, Brodie, and Hamilton. If Gillies also sticks...that's a nicely balanced 19-24 group of players. I would have made the deal myself....I tend to be wrong on stuff like this.

This is fair, but when you look at what we gave up, the probabilities of the Flames getting an impact player are heavily in our favour.
And that's what Brad has done. He's playing the probabilities. He wanted one of the top three defencemen in this draft, but the price was too much. So he went for the next best thing, and could very possibly have landed a defenceman that is better than most of them.
And with that 15th pick, I think we would have picked Barzal or Connor. I love both of them, but they don't have that potential that Dougie has.
This is an objectively favourable trade for the Flames right now. It was the right move.

Someone on the HF Bruins forum reiterated this perfectly today:
"I see a pattern emerging but I don't like to admit it. The pattern reminds me of the Sinden/MOC days of the late 90's where they absolutely detested when players had the leverage to ask for more than they wanted to give. The Dougie situation feels quite similar to the days when Jason Allison was shipped out for asking to be paid market value. I have a feeling over the next few years any time there's a tough contract negotiation the Bruins will end up moving on rather than let the player "win".
Under Sinden and MOC it felt like the Bruins had a contentious relationship with all their top players. Chia worked really hard to make players feel welcome here, but it seems like that's all over now. The old guard is back and they're not going to let the players dictate their finances."

Yup I've been thinking the same thing. Hamilton's agent tried to play hardball a bit, and this is the result?
There must be something in the water there because ever since at the Cap era was implemented, no other team has traded so many young star/superstar players so consistently since 2005.
-Thornton for Primeau, Stuart, Sturm
-Phil Kessel trade
-Seguin trade
-Hamilton trade
All budding stars at the time and superstars in Seguin and Thornton. Joe being the OLDEST at 26. Unreal. Granted they've made the final twice in that span, so it hasn't been all a loss. But talk about high risk/high reward trading.

Still shaking my head in disbelief.
The last Flames General Manager to pull off a heist this huge was Cliff Fletcher.

Somebody dug up Sweeney's old hockey card - Spoiler for coarse language.

Looking back, if we picked Andersson at 45 and Kylington at 52, nobody would have batted an eye. That leaves the first round pick -- if you hit a home run at 15 you get a Dougie Hamilton type player. Kicker #1 is that it happens to be a perfect fit in terms of organizational need, not simply BPO. Kicker #2 is that he can step in and play on your blue line tomorrow, and isn't a 2-3 year project (at minimum).
Yesterday morning: Flames rumoured to trade two second round picks for NYR's backup goalie; end up with a "Foundational Player" on the blue line that is already NHL ready, plus two defensive prospects selected in the second round.

Oh man, I forgot about the Bruins visit to the Boston Children's Hospital last Halloween...
I guess you could say that Bruins fans just need to... Let it go.

At the time of the trade? Not really. Kipper became what he is, but we didn't acquire him like that.

He set a record for the lowest GAA in the modern era the year he joined the Flames. Yes, we acquired him like that. He was just buried behind veterans on the Sharks' depth chart.

I haven't looked at his numbers lately, but wasn't he particularly mediocre during his time in net before coming over?

Yes. Even Sutter thought he'd be the back up in Calgary to Turek

I still haven't gotten used to the name Dougie Hamilton yet. I keep saying his name in my head and I'm thinking wow, next year is gonna be amazing.

Da_Chief made a good point. The Kiprusoff acquisition was indeed fortuitous. If Roman Turek was not injured we may have never seen that trade take place.
The Hamilton deal was motivated more by sheer cunning than by necessity. That's where I see the Fletcher comparison.
