I never said they weren't going for it. In the post you quoted I said they may be going for it now as well as looking 5-10 years down the road. Maybe AA feels the prospect pool is deep enough that when the current 'win now' window of approx. 3 years is up, they will be positioned nicely enough the bring up some of their prospects they already have.
I guess my thought process is that the future of the Jays is pretty uncertain (like most teams), but the present is pretty clear in that the Jays have a good enough team to make some serious noise this year and probably for the next couple/few.
He's gambling, but I'm ok with it.

Screw the future. I'd trade away every prospect we have for post-season ball.

Blue Jays and Dickey have begun discussing a contract extension, according to a league official
The source does not have a sense of when talks between TOR and Dickey will wrap up, saying they are very preliminary

Yup.
Even with my new appreciation for D'Arnaud, I think D'Arnaud for Dickey would be a steal for Toronto. Dickey is worth far more than the 3 years for $31M he's likely to cost. Witness the contracts signed with Guthrie and Dempster, who I'd say are significantly inferior looking forward over the next three years.
This is especially true if Toronto is all-in on contending next year, when the competition may be down in their division. D'Arnaud may be a prize prospect, but he's coming off knee surgery and is unproven at the major league level. Dickey is coming off a Cy Young year.
If Toronto fails to get Dickey because they won't deal D'Arnaud it will be a big mistake. If they get him for Syndergaard and others, it's a huge mistake for the Mets.

Given the price they're paying I'd like to see the Jays lock Dickey up for a 3 year extension if they can.

JIM BOWDEN @JimBowdenESPNxm
Blue Jays have gone from non-contenders to division favorites with just 2 blockbuster deals that will add Dickey, Johnson, Buehrle, Reyes
Blue Jays continue to negotiate with Bo McKinnis on extension for Dickey and price for Toronto higher than it was going to be for Mets

How often are the Jays going to have arguably the best lineup in the AL?
power, speed, on base
being consistently good is great, but this deal doesn't mean that can't happen
this deal gives them a great rotation for the next 3 years to go along with that lineup at a time when the rest of the division is in years where they will be at their weakest for probably the next decade

Higher? I wonder why? Is it a Canadian dollar thing or does he not want be in Toronto and wants to make them pay?
A little confused by this.

If that truly is the case (and I have seen a few tweets saying the same thing) then AA needs to walk away, and now. I don't like the trade as is, but part of the appeal that would exist would come from having Dickey cheap for 3 seasons. If he is now asking for 2/30 or more I would hope AA has the sense to walk. Keep your prospects, sign Shaun Marcum and call it a day. Marcum is likely good for a few less wins then Dickey but he is still a solid middle-back rotation pitcher and we would get to keep TDA and Synder.

I assumed it was because of the tax rates in Ontario vs. New York. But if it's going to cost them an arm and a leg, then AA needs to walk away if he has to.

It's a smart move for the Blue Jays when you consider that this is also a chance for them to be in the spotlight in the Toronto market with no NHL and the Raptors (and FC) being as bad as they are.
When the team loaded up in the late 80s and early 90s they moved out a lot of prospects who turned out to be good players but sometimes you just have to go for it. Players like Jeff Kent and Derek Bell.

I hope that decision doesn't factor in at all.

My oppinion on the trade has been well documented...but this is an little interesting tidbit that makes me feel a bit better...
Anthony DiComo @AnthonyDiComo
Dickey has a 1.72 ERA indoors the past three years, for what it's worth. That doesn't include any starts at Rogers Centre. #Mets #BlueJays

I really don't like the trade. Don't like giving up TDA and Syndergaard for a 38 year old with 1 (a stretch to argue more) year. I put this trade, in a vacuum, with the KC Royals trade.
I would have rather thrown a ton of dough at a FA or work something out trade wise during spring training or the season.
AA is being aggressive but it's now World Series or complete bust.

I believe in the Jays.

Unless Dickey's agent is spilling the details of any negotiations, then any asking price is nothing more then a huge guess. We know the details aren't coming out of the Jays camp, and now the Mets side will no nothing of what is happening, so they won't be the ones letting the media know anything.
This will be very interesting to see what the final price is and what players are involved.

Well, since this deal will probably go through, what's your rotation look like? I'll take a stab at it.......
Dickey
Morrow
Buehrle
Johnson
Romero

No way is Johnson your 4th Starter. No Way. I don't think people realize what they are getting in Johnson...
I'd be tempted:
Johnson
Dickey
Morrow
Romero/Buehrle
Romero/Buehrle.
And, for what it's worth, not a fan of this reported trade.

I wanted to split up the lefties, and I still think when Morrow is on, he is really on. He has #1 or #2 potential.

I really don't think it matters who is named the 1st or 4th starter, what matters is having balance throughout the rotation, and giving teams a different look every night. I like the look of Dickey, Morrow, Buerhle, Johnson, Romero because it breaks up the LHPs and puts a flame thrower after Dickey. If we really wanted to we could swap Johnson with Morrow in the order since they both throw hard.
