I have no desire to re-litigate his time as a gm
There is ample evidence that they had been trying to clear cap space for some time before finally making the Montreal deal

Kadri's deal is fine as far as UFA deals go

I meant the trade to open up space for Kadri.
No one is litigating anything. You’re asserting that if there was a better deal he would have found it. My point is you’re putting confidence in the incompetent.

‘Letting Gaudreau walk for nothing.’ What was he supposed to do, keep him chained up in the Saddledome for the rest of his life?
Unrestricted free agency is a real thing. UFAs change teams. Every team loses players that way. Get used to it.

Next to nothing may have been slight hyperbole. The point was you won't get near the return with a skyrocketing cap that you would with a flat cap and get the return the Monahan deal got.

A competent GM would have traded him before he became a free agent. If he didn’t sign before the start of his final season, he should have been traded to start the rebuild instead of using hope as a strategy. That isn’t revisionist, that’s proper management.

Seems like there are a lot of incompetent GM’s around. Doug Armstrong let Pietriangelo ‘get away for free’, Lamorello, Tulsky, Alvin, McCrimmon, Nill, Cheveldayoff, to name a few.

I will be disappointed if Conroy isn’t able to use some of all that cap space to help the team in the future. That’s really all I’m hoping for this deadline.

Right now, the year Dustin Wolf's new contract kicks in (2026-2027) and the 2nd year of Zary and Coronato's next contract, the Flames currently have $40,587,500 committed. That will leave cap space of $63,412,500.
If Wolf gets $8.5 and somehow Zary and Coronato got $7.5 each, that's $23,500,000 and the Flames would still have $39,912,500 in available space. Bahl and Frost are the only other current NHL regulars that needs and will get a new contract. The rest are Wranglers that will get promoted, other ELC's, and whatever UFA's they sign. They will continue to have loads of cap space for a long time.

The problem with Tre isn't that he let gaurdreau walk, or that he lost our young superstar in chucky, or that he traded this stupid 1st to move monahan, or that he signed Huberdeau to a horrendous contract.
The problem is that he let ALL of these things happen. In the same off season no less.
Anyone of these things alone could be excusable as contextual or #### happens he made a mistake.
All of it together is atrocious management.

He was a superstar player and the face of the franchise who had given the impression to everybody including the GM and his own agent he was willing to re-sign until the last minute. If you think that guy is staying the right move is to sign him.

All of it happened because the Flames refuse to rebuild. They tried to remain competitive when the writing was on the wall. The second Gaudreau and Tkachuk bolted that was the perfect time to rebuild. No one would have faulted them and they would have been setup perfectly to execute it. Now they're a middle of the pack team again led by a bunch of aging vets. Deja Vu.

It’s the Jankowski thread where everyone rehashes Treliving and Bennett til the end of time.

Not disagreeing at all, but if they do add someone line Ratanen (say 14 mil) it eats a big piece of what’s left.
