Yup, being cheap cost the Avs a million more a year.

Dummies. Winning franchises can lowball their best young players and hope they stay, not draft lottery franchises 15 million below cap.

It's never to be okay with liking losing however it's okay to get on board with the process of taking a step back in hopes of taking two steps forward in the future. It's still going to happen regardless of if the Avs matched or not as this team has too many older players in key positions.

I applaud Feaster's efforts but he can't just try to address the dire center situation with homeruns. He needs to try and make smaller moves as well.

Feaster clearly had a plan. He though Cervenka would be a top 6, and Backlund would be a top 6, and Stajan a top 9. Cervenka is struggling, Backlund is injured and Stajan is playing like a top 6. So he's trying to go out and get O'Rielly.

To those people who think the 1st rounder was an overpayment, how bad do you think the flames are? The defense is playing amazing - Brodie, JayBo and Wideman are all beating my expectations, and if Brodie keeps improving, by the end of the season we will have one of the best top 4 in the league.

The team is .500 without Kipper or Backlund, and just 1 centre in the entire line-up. Iggy is just getting into form, and they were having to adjust to a new coach. I honestly think this team is one centre away from being a contender for the cup - not a favorite, but a solid contender.

Top 4 defense would be top 4 anywhere in the league. Top 4 wingers - Cammy, Iggy, Hudler, Tangs are top 4 anywhere in the league. Glencross and Stempniak are top 9 anywhere in the league. Backlund looked like a top 6. This team isn't that bad - they just have no centres. One player can make a huge difference if its a top 2 centre and you don't even have 2 centres on your roster.

This gets better after knowing Darren Dreger was wrong. I love when that egomaniac is wrong.

Unlike our neighbours to the north.
? The Oilers made an OS twice.

That was a gutsy and potentially franchise changing move. None of us know how it would have played out but I for one was excited about the role of the dice here and am pleased to know that Feaster is looking to make big moves. Signing ROR was a chance worth taking.

Change of direction is inevitable. Still, even if they go into full rebuild mode and sell off their top-end talent I will be tuning in every game expecting and cheering for wins.

There is a slight difference in that the Oilers pounced in July trying to poach while the Flames made an offer to a player that was at a long stalemate with a player that looked like no resolution coming. At the end of the day the Flames are still trying to poach but it's not like they didn't give the Avalanch ample time to sign the guy.

Huffing, beer pong or smoking?

Have you seen Chicago, Anaheim, LA, or Pittsburg play. We are not even close in talent. Yes a top end center will help but this team is multiple pieces away from being a top contender.

I wonder what would have happened if the Flames had offered something like 5 years and 35-40 million.

I agree with you. This team has been bad the last few years so everyone has run out of patience. This year seems to be different in terms of compete level and skill throughout the lineup.

I still believe they can make a run in the playoffs. Cup contender might be a bit of a stretch though.

I'm talking about since they started their rebuild (which was 2010 according to Oil fans).

Has there been a team more timid, more afraid to make a move than the Oilers these past 3 years? They are a team that is afraid to make a trade that makes the team better in fear of negative public perception. They are a fantasy hockey team created by fan majority opinion. The biggest move they've made in the last 3 years is signing Ryan Smyth.

Also, Tambellini wasn't GM when the Oilers offer sheet'd Penner.

They would have been laughing stock of the league for 5+ years.

The top 4 defencemen and wingers aren't close to the top 4 in each area for the teams in league.

Maybe if that center is Crosby there might be a chance but this team is a lot more than a center away from competing.

No #### put the crack pipe down. He would have made us better down the middle but there's no way we are contenders. There has been nothing for me to believe that this team has turned the corner and started to play great hockey on a consistant basis. Given everything thats happened yes we've exceded expectations by not being the bottom dwellers of the leaugue.

That sucks. Exactly the type of player we need and he could have helped now and for years down the road. F U Sherman.

Well, at least we still have our picks.
