I do think if you swapped Oilers and Flames rosters, the flames would be the more popular team right now.
Oilers and Flames are fighting over a market. There's diehards like ourselves who could never cheer for the other side, but for alot of casual Alberta/Saskatchewan fans, they just cheer for whoever is more exciting and succesful. Then you throw in the kids all over, who just watch the best player highlights and cheer for that team.
It is a long term investment that plays dividends too. Because those kids are between 5-15. They grow up and stay fans on those teams with the players they idolized and start spending money.
Yeah the flames have had some of this, most predominantly with Iggy. I think that's where many of us Millennials got locked in. Gaudreau too.
I think Wolf can start to be that. I'm not sure that Goalies always have the same magnetism as a star forward though.
Just to clarify, the Flames would be more popular if you swapped them today, sure, but I’m saying the Flames with McDavid, the team around him, and the last 10 years of Oilers history would be less popular than the Oilers are today with McDavid, the team around him, and the last ten years of Oilers history.
Yes they’re competing for part of the same market, but people also cheer for and become fans of the teams their parents and grandparents cheered for. The Oilers just have legacy and reach the Flames will never have. Can’t change that. If you removed all the fans that are fans because of star players, performance, recent history, and anyone that would happily cheer for whichever team, there are far more Oiler fans remaining than Flames fans.
Kids are a whole other thing, but I think at the end of the day they just cheer who their parents cheer for. My friend’s kid is a Flames fan. Who is his favourite player? Huberdeau. By far. Still likes guys like McDavid, McKinnon, etc. But will likely always be a Flames fan… not because Huberdeau is a bigger star than McDavid, but because his parents are Flames fans.
So yesterday’s show then? I saw it and I didn’t take away from what he said that it was in works and now pretty much up to Sid to make the call. I took from it that it’s an interesting idea.

Edmonton fandom spread across the province and into other province like a sordid seed. It then spawns more seeds and the toxicity continues to spread. Like a noxious weed or invasive species you can only hope to mitigate its growth and spread. Flames fandom will never catch up.

Saw it clipped online and thought it was from today, but you are right that it is yesterday's show.
I won't be mad if we simply stay put. I mean, if someone wants to give up a pick for Vladar or Hanley, have at it, but I wouldn't be shocked if there weren't any bigger moves. Don't really have to make a decision about Ras right now, so unless a team blows you away, might as well wait until the summer.

I find Kypreos to be full of ####. I have a very hard time believing this at all. He is starting to throw a lot of outrageous stuff out there lately to get clicks.
