Flames aren't retaining the $$$ to make the trade happen to a cap strapped team.
They are retaining $35M of cap that isn't worth the player. The 50% retention is to just get the cap down to the perceived worth of the player. You don't get 1st round picks for that.
Huberdeau at $5.25M for 7 years is still somewhat of a gamble.
He's been a 50 point player getting premium and PP ice time. Unless he improves quite a bit, he won't be getting premium and PP ice time, and those numbers will go down.
This is am important year for Huberdeau. If he can get to 70 points, he could be movable with maybe just 25% retention.
But Calgary is not trading Huberdeau with 50% retained. Just no reason to do so.

According to a report from Dennis Bernstein of The Fourth Period, the Los Angeles Kings have lost the services of 23 year old forward Arthur Kaliyev and it sounds like he may be out for quite some time.
Bernstein reports that Kaliyev suffered a significant injury on Friday when he took a hit during training camp, a hit that would result in an upper body injury to the Kings’ forward. Bernstein also adds that Kaliyev may require surgery to repair the damage to his body, and is expected to miss a few months as a result of this injury.

That's no gamble. That's a deal every team in the NHL would do in a heartbeat if available.

Really? The term plus age is the killer part. Even w retention and an improbable bounce back season it would scare me off if I was a GM.

Even without a bounce-back, he is still a 50-60 point player. That is worth more than $5.5M these days.
And the potential is there to re-find his game and produce at a higher level than that. Yes, any team would jump at that.

They would do so if they got enough return to make it worthwhile. But no team is retaining $35M over 7 years, unless they are compensated to do so.
Thus, the proposal quoted above is ridiculous.

Like what? Viktor Arvidsson wasn't exactly a picture of health in Nashville. Half the time they didn't even play Kaliyev even when healthy. 15 players played 70+ games last year.
There's something in the air, maybe. We aren't exactly known for clean air.

Not a lot of teams need a goalie and he was reportedly looking for 2m. At this time, it sounds like only the Canucks had any interest in actually signing a contract as opposed to a PTO. The Canucks interest had been constant since news about Silovs came out, but they didn't budge one iota on the money amount. As opposed to trying to play for a job, he took the offer and will go into Canucks pre-season as the starter.

Calgary's motivation would be to save 35 million, not the return. The 35 million lost is a right off.
But I don't think we are there yet. They still think they can get him going. I also don't think Huberdeau at 5.5x7 has positive value.
The best bet is to put Huberdeau on an offensive line with the right linemates and hope he can get you 70+ for the next two seasons. Then you start talking about retaining salary on a trade.

I can promise you that Craig has no desire to trade Huberdeau and retain 50% for the length of term.
Beat writers can speculate all they want, but it won’t happen.

The most the Flames can save this year is $2.85 million. If they cut payroll any more than that, they'll be below the salary floor.
In that position, trading away Huberdeau, even with 50% retained, is a non-starter. Next summer the situation may be different, but not now.

I would love it if the Flames could explore a trade around Huberdeau + 2nd for Couturier + Petersen.
