Very quiet throughout the tourney. Didn't show a lot of dynamic skill. Which he will need at his size.

Yeah, in Penticton I had to look up his number on the roster to find him. Yager popped and was very noticeable in the first game the Flames played. I was expecting something similar from Savoie being older and a 9th overall, but he was invisible.

The Sabres have a stable of young, talented forward prospects who have all progressed more than Savoie. Kulich has been lighting it up. Benson stuck in the NHL after his first camp. Quinn will be given an opportunity as a top-six forward. Ostlund and Rosen both leapfrogged Savoie. Helenius was tagged as one of the more NHL ready forwards in his draf. It’s not at all surprising that they moved on from Savoie.

Sometimes when a team moves a prospect it's because of something they see, and not a "hey do you want the guy that we think is going to be great?!"
Especially if the deal isn't done for a rental or a huge piece for a playoff run, and instead a middle six forward with wheels.

It definitely seems a little high right now. Especially looking at what most UFA D went for in the offseason.
That said, it's better to overpay your youth to lock them up long term. OTT did great on Sanderson. In the meantime, I bet EDM is regretting bridging Bouchard, and DAL will regret bridging Harley.

Reminder that's the pick they got from Vancouver as part of the OEL trade.

And Vancouver is still paying for another seven years on the OEL buyout.
Sucks to be Vancouver.

It’s the time of year to watch for injuries to players on other teams. Especially for teams desperate to make the playoffs. Teams like Buffalo, New Jersey, Ottawa and Detroit can’t really play it safe and battle through a rough start to the season because some top players are injured. Buffalo apparently had a scare with Dahlin yesterday… sounds like it’s minor and he’ll just be out for a few days. But any of those teams would be great trade partners for an Andersson trade - especially if they lost a defenceman to injury. Teams loaded with picks and prospects that are ready/desperate to take a step forward. Maybe less so with New Jersey as they have spent a lot of draft capital already. But I would also add Utah to that list - I bet ownership will be really eager to have a breakout season to get some momentum going in the fanbase. Would make them a great target for a trade.

Essentially just fan chatter, but it's interesting to see an outside perspective. But this, well this is... something and if it was so...

The quiet offseason by the New York Islanders this summer could be an indication that the club is biding its time for a big deal to come along.
In particular, I’m looking at the Calgary Flames and winger Jonathan Huberdeau.
|
Quote:
Trading Huberdeau at this point would be a mistake for the Flames. His value is at its lowest point. He’s coming off a 50-point season and is now several seasons removed from his last, big year. As such, the Flames would realistically be looking to get a couple of mid-round picks and a young player.
In that scenario, the Isles could easily part with a third and fourth-round pick. Plus, throwing in a player like Oliver Wahlstrom or Simon Holmstrom could get the needle moving. Judging from the Markstrom deal, the Flames don’t have an astronomical asking price.
Perhaps the most important thing for Calgary is just getting Huberdeau’s contract off their hands.
Now, that would be the sticking point. There’s no way the Isles can take on the full $10.5 million cap hit unless the club clears significant space. As such, the Flames could likely need to retain at least 50% of Huberdeau’s deal.
If that’s the case, the asking price might be a bit higher. However, the New York Islanders would be foolish to part with a first-round pick in this situation.

Anyone in the league would take Huby at 5.25M/per.
But that value of retention is roughly a late first or early second for every year. Not going to happen. The only way is a cap dump, and that means Adam Pelech comes back to Calgary, because his no-trade clause hasn't kicked in yet. There are no other players available to make that trade with the Isle, that they could fit under the cap for more than a year.

At least 50%? Why not 100%? If you're going to larp as a hockey writer but immediately reveal yourself to be a dufus, might as well go all the way.

Team A retains 50%, Team B retains 50% on the remainder, Team C gets the player for effectively 75% retained salary.

I just don’t see any Huberdeau trade as a being plausible until he puts up an 80pt+ season.

I guess that was the impetus for the article. Teams in the East saw prime Huberdeau fairly recently. They know what he is capable of, and that it's just not happening in Calgary.
So what would a Huby, Horvat, Barzal line look like? Potentially really great.
There is a possibility of capitalizing on a team that wants to take that chance, but that contract isn't an issue because Huby is not going to live up to it, it's an issue because of cap space.
If Calgary trades Huby to NYI for Wahlstrom and Pelech, then NYI just has to trade Palmeiri for free to a team like Columbus (he has a modified NTC) and they have potentially improved their team by quite a lot. It's a gamble, but Lou is a gambler.
The interesting part is that it's in the minds of fans to the east.

There is no need to move Huberdeau at this point. Let him rebuild his value a bit. We don’t need the cap space, and his veteran presence might not be the worst thing.

So this guy wants the Flames to retain more than $35M, but doesn't think they should give up a 1st for that?
Okay dude.
