I mean the Flames did fine, they have Tkachuk. Andersen is in the playoffs and doing alright. Now. Just seemed like a pointless thing to bring up.

I dunno. I love stuff like that. We had heard it before so it isn't new, but I love hearing about deals that almost happened but didn't.
Far more interesting than 99% of the stuff that gets reported.

Andersen is a fairly good goalie having an outstanding PO series. Lots of goalies have done that, but reverted to form. Sometimes in the same POs.

I probably just have my hackles up because its Toronto and I'm bracing to be annoyed thoroughly by their media if they win tonight and move on.

My apologies! I don't mean to rustle any feathers, I just find that sort of stuff interesting and thought some other's might as well. No way I'm trading Tkachuk for Anderson.

No don't apologize it is neat to read! I'm just being a homer and getting annoyed prematurely at Toronto media types.
I should be the one apologizing, I didn't mean to derail anything.

Hamilton’s value is at an all time high and should, theoretically, net us a far better return. Unless some GM is going to offer a great return for Brodie based on the hope he’ll bounce back with a change of scenery I’d rather put my money on the risk that Brodie stands a better chance bouncing back paired with Gio, maximize the return I get for trading one of our top Dmen, and increase Brodie’s value going forward at the same time.
|
The whole buy low, sell high thing doesn't always make a lot of sense when it comes to sports. Why would you sell high when high value players give you a better chance of winning? Athletes aren't stocks, the athlete is the asset you want, whereas a stock is an asset you want to sell for money.
Trading a high value asset that is expendable is different. If you believe Hamilton is expendable, and the return fills an area of need with a player of equal value, then I agree you should sell high. Or if you have a high value asset that you believe is going to decline soon then it might make sense to sell, although that is more or less a gamble.
Different assets have different value to different teams. Brodie, a fast, puck moving defenseman with offensive upside, that logs a ton of minutes, likely has a high value to different teams in the league, but would be more or less expendable for the Flames (depending on who you talk to). My point is; buy low sell high is too simplistic in the context of a sports team. To me, it's basically saying "trading a highly valued player will yield a better return than a low valued player" that's basically a truism and it doesn't necessarily mean you should do it.

Andy can also play 65 games without wearing down. He's not one of the top 5 goalies in the league, but he's certainly in the next group of being a well above average and durable starting goalie. I'd kill to have him, and would one less question mark for this team.

Lots of observers outside this forum have speculated that the Flames are going to deal a core piece. Insiders have hinted that there's something wrong with the identity of the team. You don't change that by moving 3rd liners.
Some fans are in love with this core, some aren't. Personally, I find it hard to feel much passion or loyalty for the core of a 20th place team that has a history of folding in big games. And some of the best trades in Flames history involved trading away very good core players. Dan Quinn comes to mind. He led the team in points as a 21 year old before he was traded in what was another 'culture' move. Quinn brought back 50-goal man Mike Bullard, who was in turn moved for Doug Gilmour.

Honestly though an elite forward with the edge that Tkachuk brings is way harder to find than a goalie like Anderson.
I think if we made that deal we'd be sitting here complaining about how we gave away another pain in the A to play against to the Ducks for a good but not great goalie.

I'd still like to look at Hoffman or even Stone, who is going to be an expensive RFA for Ottawa. Given they almost have to sign EK, they have to either not sign Stone or get rid of Hoffman, because of their internal budget.

Oh, I think he's in the second tier of goalies. I think Tkachuk is going to be in the first tier of wingers.
If there had been a different price I was in favour of Andersen at the time he was traded, over most of the other options.

Based on the praise that Peters was heaping on Monahan and Hamilton in his interviews, I'd be very surprised if either one is moved.
I guess you could interpret it as him trying to pump up their trade value, but I doubt it. That would be a weird thing to ask your new head coach to do on his first day on the job.

I wouldn't make the trade either. And hard to know what was on the table. Probably more like a combination of picks/prospects, not necessarily assumed it was 6th pick or go home.
Andy would have been worth paying a high price for, but I certainly agree, Chucky was too high of a price.

Happened after the lottery, the week before the draft.
Anderson went for the 30th overall pick in 2016, and a 2nd round pick in 2017.
As reported the cost was higher for the Flames. So it would have probably been the swap of 1st round picks (6 for 21) and a 2nd that the Ducks were asking for...at the very least.

Yeah, it's pretty frustrating to hear about the times the Flames almost landed a good young goalie, only to be thwarted or back away for one reason or another, and then to see what those goalies have done since. Especially since we've had issues with finding a young long term option so far, and it's cost us.
Freddy Andersen, Matt Murray, Martin Jones....
I wouldn't be at all surprised if Tre goes out and gets Grubauer this off season, but at the same time I won't be shocked if he sticks with the Rittich/Gillies tandem battling for back up duties behind Smith.
I have to admit, I wanted nothing to do with MAF coming to the Flames last off season, but he sure proved me wrong on that one. He's been stellar in Vegas.
What's funny (or sad) is that Matt Murray, Freddy Andersen and Connor Hellebuyck were all drafted in the same draft as Gillies, after Gillies.

I would rather have MAF than smith every single day.
I think we are all sitting here today and see RW as our biggest weakness but I'd almost guarantee that it will be goaltending that is our biggest weakness by december next year.
Smith is 37 and really isn't elite, he's pretty comparable to CuJo over his career, never the best but good enough to be Canada's 3rd string goalie.
I just don't see how we can expect Smith and Rittich / Gillies to work out well.
I think Tre is putting a LOT of faith in one of Rittich or Gillies stepping up and playing ~30 games of quality starts.
Feel like we missed the goalie market by a year and took the wrong guy last offseason...

Yeah, the Flames would be stupid to bring in an elite #1 center who's still south of 30. Haha. Tavares isn't a game changer? You have got to be kidding me.
No he's not as good as McDavid, that we can agree on. One signed an RFA contract with little options, the other will be signing a UFA contract with a ton of offers from just about every team. Naturally he's going get more than you'd ideally like to pay him. That still doesn't mean you walk away from it if you have the chance to land him.
He's a top 15 or so scorer in the league with guys like Anders Lee and Josh Bailey on his wings. Look at what happens to the wingers he's carried over the years when they become too expensive and some other dumbass teams pay up to get them, and find out after wards just how much of their numbers came from playing with an elite game changing center like Tavares.
There is always gotta be one person who goes against the grain that's for sure haha.

People still confusing RFA contracts with UFA contracts...oh CP
Stajan/Brouwer made 7.5M this past season...I would be happy to "overpay" a top end player

ugh... don't even mention Martin Jones please...
still stunned that a kid who was good enough to make the WJr roster goes undrafted...
fine... tons of teams totally botched that one... however, only one of those teams was literally playing in the same building as Jones was.
not sure how calgary couldn't see he was worth a late pick when they were literally down the hall...
