Kadri and Hanifin need to leave to facilitate Nylander with an extension.
Backlund would have to re up at below 4m.
Huberdeau-Lindholm-Nylander
Pelletier-Sharangovich-Coronato
Mandiapane-Backlund-Dueher
Coleman-Ruzicka-Dube
I can live with that. Lots of room for guys to pop and shuffle around.
Defense, I think the Flames can be set.
It'll be a middling team with upside.
It can be done.
Trick is to do it without giving up picks.

Except if Backlund decides he still wants out, then you lose him and keep Kadri.

What is the point of adding Nylander and paying him what he wants to that team that isn’t competing for the Cup?

Ask management man. And nobody knows what the next cup team looks like.

That forward group is….I really don’t know what to think. On the one hand it looks like ####. On the other hand there’s a ton of opportunity for some of these young guys to step up. Either way it’d be fun to watch
D will have a huge Hanifin sized hole
Goaltending a big question mark but with a ton of upside
If the PP and goaltending improve can they be a playoff team? Probably…maybe? If Wolf and young forwards step up could they be a good team….maybe? Could they be dog #### and finish bottom five…maybe?
Hasn’t been boring that’s for sure. LFG

This is pretty much how I'm thinking. Things could go a lot of ways but it will be fun to watch play out.
The only thing is I'm pretty sure the hole won't be Hanifin-sized as it seems overwhelmingly likely we'll get a roster defenseman back either in his trade or another trade. It will obviously be a downgrade, but if Kyllington can find his form again then that will help a lot.

I don’t want to give Lindholm the huge extension and certainly don’t want to do that with Nylander either. Flames management could look and stay the course if they were able to acquire Nylander with Hanifin, Vladar, and maybe a small add. The game plan 2 years ago was build around Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Lindholm a proven top line in the league.
If they were to build around Huberdeau-Lindholm-Nylander it would be a similar approach just swapping some star wingers around.

I agree with the management part, we don’t know what the Stanley Cup champs look like but pretty safe to say their 2nd line won’t be Pelletier-Sharangovich-Coronato.

I'd rather extend a center than a RW with the same $$ amount, they only a year apart in age.

Of course not. Kadri is our 2C.

The Presidents trophy winners not winning it doesn't mean it is a free for all from every other team. It takes talent to win. Mediocre teams don't win the Cup.

Lol, Vegas' leading scorer had 66 points. Not a single player over a ppg in the regular season. The difference between winning and losing is so small. Especially nowadays. So define mediocre?

Vegas in the past 5 years have been to 2 conference finals and a SCF. That certainly doesn’t qualify as mediocre no matter how many points their leading scorer had.

Vegas also had a great season, then missed the playoffs, then won the SC the year after. It can be done.

So adding that major piece takes (at least) one major piece out.

My worry is locking up that core with more player/s with term and things don't work out fixing it could create some handicaps and expensive problems. Would rather wait and see how our guys perform and then look at the state of the team. What happens if Huberdeau has another bad season or Kadri pulls a Neal and just doesn't have the horses. Most likely they bounce back but Fflames should look long term and play the safe hand until they know what they have working next season.

Not exactly similar circumstances given the Knights were totally derailed by injuries when they missed the playoffs. The Flames were a healthy team after a major roster shakeup where they lost their two best players and simply weren't good enough last season in missing the playoffs.

Healthy physically, but quite obviously not healthy mentally.

All the pissing and moaning about signing guys at 27/28 to long-term deals but then talk about extending Backlund who wants multiple years? If there is a player the Flames need to move on from it is Backlund. Love the guy as a person and his commitment to the community, but we're about to see a drop in ability like crazy. Use his big year to get some assets and keep the development ball rolling. Follow Carolina's lead here. Move players that aren't in the long-term plan and bring in assets that keep the system well stocked.

I think the difference is Backlund extended comes in at a discount on his current cap hit (at least people who want him extended assume that). Giving 29 year olds 8 year deals at $9M ensures when they are Backlunds age they are making that top player money.
I think many fans want most of the UFA’s dealt but no assets are more important to get right than Lindholm and Hanifin.

I think bringing in Nylander would be a mistake. He’s a great player. But way too expensive. Would rather keep Lindholm.
