I'm not saying that Gio is a bad player. He's a very smart D-men, that's in great shape for his age. That said, Gio would be signing with a team like CGY, so that CGY moves him at the TD to a contender, and I don't think there will be much of a market for Gio then.

Depends. If he defies the odds, as he has his entire career, and has a great season as a bottom pair PK guy then I could see him being quite valuable. He'd fit into almost any team's cap structure at that point and would be cheap insurance.

And Giordano added pretty much means Solovyov is on waivers.
That's not the end of the world ... I think he's likely a 5 max and probably a 6/7 but Barrie making the team would have to expose him or Pachal.

I’m obviously a Gio fan. But the time is not now, there’s no indication that he has management ability, and I’m not even sure this is his first choice (well, I’m sure it would have been Toronto).
Of course, the downside is that Edmonton could sure use him. Can you imagine brining Gio on a PTO, not signing him and then seeing him go to Edmonton to shore up their sad D?

A contender might take some early injuries and give him a shot also.

Its sad and unfortunate the way Gio's career with the Flames ended, it felt like it was very unfinished.
That said, the only reason to bring him in now is for sentimentality/leadership. I wouldn't hate it, but it would feel somewhat unecessasry.

For the Oilers to add him, they would have to move either Brown or Stecher (I assume the wonder-child Emberson is untouchable). They need Brown's size, after losing Desharnias and Ceci, so it would have to be Stecher.
Is a 41 year old Giordano an improvement on Stecher? It would add another half a year to the team's average age, and would make them even slower.

Would be ad form for conroy to block Gio from getting into management as an advisor/assistant considering that's how Conroy and now iginla started.
He is the longest serving flames captain, one of the longest tenured flames, undrafted player that became a two-way noris winner and a class act guy.
Would love to see him back in the org and it would be strange for them not to give him a shot.

Block Gio? There are 32 teams. There is no 'bad form' here.

I think Conroy was coaxed into retirement and a management position by Feaster because he liked his hockey mind. Iginla was away from the organization for a decade before returning.
Giordano wants a final contract as a player, Conroy thinks there's no room for him, maybe at some point they can look at a management role if they're interested but you can't just give every player a post player role.

Maybe Ilya Solovyov is the next Giordano? Guy was overlooked twice in the draft and then taken in the seventh round. He's steadily improved since then.
Also, I wouldn't read too much into Iginla's role with the team. As far as I can tell, he is still based in Kelowna, where he sits in his barcalounger watching games on TV and then tells Conroy what he thinks. It's a fairly informal role.
With the Wranglers adding Brett Sutter to the coaching ranks, plus Stajan and Stone kicking around, the organization is well-stocked with alumni.

i think the bigger question is if the oilers add him would that now give them 6 giordanos?

I'd be pretty surprised if he weren't in town for the start of the season. There's no reason to leave Kelowna on Sept 7, especially when all our management team and prospects are about to go meet him.
I can't think of a more incongruent pair than Iggy and a Barca lounger.

Giordano may or may not be a good management prospect, but that is something that can be revisited down the road. I just hope it doesn't cause a rift with the Flames organization.
I recall a falling out in the early 2000s with Lanny McDonald, fresh off the helm of a couple of Hockey Canada World Championships teams, angling for a Flames Hockey Operations role. Until then, he had been in corporate suite sales and community relations.

Yeah, I don’t think so … I’ve seen Iggy at Flames camps, he turns up at tournaments

If Gio really wanted to play another season his best bet would be to sign an AHL only deal with somebody for now; and then see if a contender will sign him for depth before the deadline.
Allows him to stay in shape and play but a team isn't feeling like they need to keep him on the roster right now.
But once rosters expand and a minimum salary is nothing he becomes easy to fit in

Fair, bit at 41 he probably isn't interested in riding the bus around anymore. I'd think if be doesn't get a PTO anywhere he probably just retires.

With Hakanpaa out for the foreseeable future Gio likely is the 7th d man option in Toronto. I’d imagine he stay and from what I remember he and Treliving were on decent terms. Can’t fault Treliving for leaving him exposed from the ED based on age.

Some players know when to retire while others have to be rejected by all NHL teams before they realize their time is up.

That's a goofy way to look at it. Theyre professional athletes, their entire life has been about pushing as hard as they can to be the best they can.
To keep pushing until they're rejected due to no more interest isn't the black mark/lack of understanding you imply it is. It's just who they are, it's what they do. There's millions of hopeful athletes that don't have that never quit attitude inside them...and they mostly never made professional sport leagues.
