I've been trying to watch movies I would have missed as a wee lad for whatever reasons. I know younger me put a lot of reliance on box art and title which steered me away from some great movies I recently watched. I watched Close Encounters of the Third kind this weekend and i'm not sure if I just don't remember it as a kid or never watched it but one example of a movie I would have never picked because of the box/name that was amazing was.

Amadeus is incredible. I recommend a pretty immersive sound system while watching.

Watched Pain Hustlers on Netflix. It had terrible reviews but I kinda liked it. A little bit paint by numbers. Emily Blunt, Chris Evans. Pharma, fentanyl, bribing doctors.
It’s not ground breaking but it was enjoyable. A bit rage inducing though with how evil all those companies are.

It was OK. I thought some parts were funny too, I'm just not sure they were intended to be. Mostly a lot of COPD and mucus. Interesting take on it though. 7/10

Robert Eggers is simply one of the best in the business right now. The sample size is still small but his batting average is very near perfect if not so.
That was a disorienting trip.. The sets and costumes were on point, just amazing. Atmospheric would be an understatement.
He gives you a lot to ...sink your teeth into.
Worst business trip ever?
I sort of want to roll all my Rs aggressively now.

I was a massive fan of the Northman and was looking forward to this quite a bit. Yeah, I loved Nosferatu as well. It kind of exceeded my expectations and proves that Eggers is an absolute master. My only reservation originally was the casting of Lily Rose, I'm glad to be wrong, she was incredible. The entire cast are so damn good. Going to be seeing it again very soon.

It definitely walked a line, and was nearly Campy. But the sound design, costumes really held it together I thought.
Also I think it was meant to be funny. Lots of folks in our showing were laughing.

I watched the very Canadian film Exotica, highly recommend it. In a Toronto strip club a lonely CRA auditor comes in every night requesting a dance from popular stripper Christina. It's one of those movies with multiple storylines and characters intersecting and by the end it all makes sense. It also stars the actor who played Casey Jones in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie as the strip club DJ who used to date Christina. The movie is so much more than that brief synopsis I provided, but it's really good and emotional and the ending really changes what you just saw.

Just watched The Order (2024) I believe it was filmed around Calgary. I recognized a few locations and I think a Strathmore Hotel or mini-mall maybe? Movie wasn't bad but nothing spectacular. It was weird seeing Jude Law as an old man with a mustache. Having a baby face was always his calling card. It felt like he was trying to channel his inner Rupert Anderson (from Mississippi Burning a far superior film) but he's definitely no Gene Hackman.

They were filming in Inglewood. Mostly in the gun shop I think.

Also that hellhole motel on 16 Ave just west of Deerfoot. (the one with Len's Den 'pub'). I saw film crews around there a couple of weeks ago so it looks like it's becoming the go to seedy location for movies involving holed up people on the lam/crackheads. Also noticed North Hill Mall, as mentioned, and various downtown streets for the driving scenes.
I thought Jude Law was excellent but the movie overall was a 7/10.

I too watched the order. Like every new movie it had promise but the overall production just fells like it fell short.
There was a lot more they could have done with that story.
I think partly for me it was the casting of the lead villain. Just didnt have the chops to portray the snake charmer militant baddie.

I went to see Baby Girl this weekend at my wife's behest. It had a few interesting moments, but it's just a mess of a film that didn't know what it wanted to be. Maybe that ambiguity was the point? I dunno.
The first act has some interesting moments where the two leads are trying to work out what each other wants sexually, but it happens in fits and starts and with some genuine awkwardness. That was cool, but then it devolved into a standard affair storyline, with some political overtones that felt like hack writing.
She wanted sexy stuff and left disappointed. I wanted a story and some sort of interesting character work, and was left wanting. 5/10.
Also, just an utterly odd film to release at Christmas time. I cannot figure out the decisions behind this movie.
