With larger, more complicated trades, I always find that it provides clarity to break it down into pieces:
Farabee ($5M) for Kuzmenko ($5.5M) + 2nd
The math works, but let's be honest, if anyone proposed this, they would get shredded for being a homer. This is a pretty big win for the Flames.
Frost ($2.1M) for Pelletier ($.8M) + 7th.
I love Pelletier, and I love what he brings. But we need a C, and Frost is a pretty good one. Again, if anyone proposes that we offer Pelletier straight up for Frost (okay, we'll throw in a 7th), they're getting mocked for being a homer.
Both halves of this trade are clear wins for the Flames. They are a better team today than yesterday. And by a fair margin, IMO.
I did something similar but I broke it down into:
Frost for Pelletier, 2nd,
Farabee for Kuzmenko,
and the 7th was apparently the sweetener Briere needed.
I like the move. The concern would be why Philly felt they wanted/needed to move off from 25 year old center and a 24 year old winger. Cap space sure, but good players aren't just moved for cap space unless they aren't a fit or the existing/future contracts look to be an issue.

Ok i have to say something here. It may not have floated down to the regular folk but its well known among scouting circles that 28 7th round may be the best one of the decade.

If you find yourself concerned and wondering why Philly would want to move on from these guys, one thing to consider is that the people running that franchise may in fact be giant morons

This seems risky due to Farabee's contract and the fact that they'll have to re-sign Frost at year end with limited info. I'm not as concerned about Frost really but that Farabee hit is rough to take on if he doesn't become better than essentially a 4th liner.
These guys seem like the epitome of "I feel like they're good but they're not actually very good".
I disagree. What's the risk other than to Edward's pocketbook? Flames have so much cap space, they require Huberdeau's $10.5M just to reach the cap floor. Yes, we'll have to sign Wolf, Zary, and Coronato soon, but even with their pay bumps, I can't see Flames having any sort of cap issues for Farabee's remaining contract. It's not like Flames are going to go big game hunting in the next few years on UFAs (nor should they).

That's why it's never a bad idea to target players who play for a "tough" coach. Sometimes you can get really talented guys that unfairly get put in the doghouse. Sort of like Sam Bennett when he was here.
It happens.
Even if they are just "ok" that's still a big win.
If they bounce back at all, it's highway robbery.

Because they had a fight once? He's a pro, I'm sure it will be fine. If anything I bet it fires him up, the shot in the arm that Conroy referred to for a playoff push.
Exactly the same issue when the Flames traded for that guy from St. Louis that one time. Iginla wasn't too thrilled.
Oh wait.

It's a great trade for the Flames, Kuzmenko is deadweight and Pelletier is a tweener type prospect. These are two established NHL players in their primes who could still project to be 20+ goal, 50+ point players or better. A second round pick turning into that 3-4 years down the road would be seen as a huge win, to get two of them contributing now at such a low cost? Stellar trade.

I really like Pelletier. Hope he keeps progressing in Philly. Tenacity wise, he seems like a good Torts player. I don't fully get the "well he was waivers, he's basically a throw-in" comments that I'm seeing, particularly from outside this board. Markstrom. Pomminville. Grabner. There have been lots of players who passed through waivers early in their career only to prove to every team they should have been claimed. Pelletier's production is more or less up 50 percent in both the AHL and NHL. He doesn't look out of place at all in the NHL this year. Couldn't say the same last year.
Kuzmenko is what he is. Very talented but streaky. Will be curious to see if their is any trade deadline interest if the Flyers retain salary. Or he might be a good medium term fit to give Michkov a Russian friend to chat with on the bench.
I don't know enough about Frost and Farabee but really excited to watch them. I'm hopeful that a new city, close-nit locker room, a playoff chase, no Tortorella, a goalie that can actually stop the puck, etc... can spark them. If they continue to be 30-40 point players, I'd say this a fairly even trade. If the Flames can get a 50 or 60 point season out of one of them, we could look back at this as a big win.
Pick wise, its a 2nd round pick that will likely be in the 40th to 50th overall range. With a stable full of "2nd round quality" and above prospects, a bunch more picks, the Flames are in good shape.
Such a stupid detail, but I want to know if Philly was pushing hard for Calgary's 2nd round pick instead of Colorado's (with the logic that the Av's should finish higher than the Flames). Because I'd love for the Colorado pick to be the higher one.
Overall, good trade. Hopefully ends up being a win for both longterm. I've always had a soft spot for Philly. The feel like the closest equivalent to the Flames in the east in terms of their up and down yearly results, rival getting the superstar players, etc...
