Some would say a big D and a massive package are the same thing.

I think the Flames should just wait and pluck a depth d-man off of waivers

I'm actually just hoping the Flames shed salary. I don't have confidence they last long in the playoffs (thinking first round exit) even if they make it, so no thanks from a fan perspective. It still hurts getting trounced by the Coilers last year.

Maybe someone will actually give us something for Michael Stone, with his booming shot from the blueline

I am surprised no one brought up the note about they contemplated canning Sutter.

You can feel the tension on the team and the season we are having. His attitude all season has made it a tense enviroment.

You can see the players like each other but it feels like they hate the coach and his negativity.

I bet that's just media trying to drum up talking points. They've tried the players' coach in the past and it didn't work at all. Honestly, the team should look at the standings - that's the reason for the negativity. If they want Sutter to stop being hard on them, then maybe they should win some games.

This is a different team now and its looking like Sutter is not the right coach for them.

I disagree that it is a different team - other than two players the roster looks pretty similar to me. If I accept your premise, I do not think that the message you send to the team is that the coach can be fired if the team is unhappy. They should be unhappy. The coach should be hard on them. They are a veteran team that isn't presently in the playoffs. I doubt that there is a better coach that is coming here. In my view, you upgrade coaching if there is a better option, not a different option. Change for the sake of change is not how good franchises operate.

Stone isn't going anywhere. He wants to stay in Calgary so will probably just retire.

You can be hard no one saying to coddle the players, but he has been over the top this season.

If your team is miserable especially one that the owners are paying a lot of money too you make the change.

Coleman to the Bolts
Lekhonen to the Avs last year

EDIT: when you look at this list you see what kind of player actually impacts (note that Dmen are kind of different so other than Kaberle I didn't look at themn as much - arguably Manson was a factor providing depth last year). But for forwards it's middle six guys who maybe can play with the top guys from time to time, like Kunitz.

The teams that traded for the middle 6 players already had a solid top 6 in place. If you're going in to the playoffs without a solid top 6, you're not going far.

The point is more, there’s no elite players being traded. You go for guys who are going to be upper mid level. Of all those players, who is more than middle six?

Sure, those cup winners were good anyway. And maybe they’d have won without the acquisitions. But those were the guys who came in an impacted a cup winner or runner up post lockout.

At the deadline you should be trading for someone to push you over the top, not drag you into the playoffs. If you're not solidly in, you're not a threat.

Our own coach has literally had two teams that barely made playoffs and then made the cup final

Iggy, one of the best, if not very best power forward to play in the NHL. Kipper, elite world-class goalie, RR who was one of the best defensive defensemen to play for a while.

What does this roster have?

A ton of depth. That 04 team had no depth until when? The trade deadline. Then it acquired Nilson, Nieminen, and Simon - made playoffs and made an unbelievable run.

We don’t have the top end talent like that team but our defense is miles better than Commodore, Montador, and Brennan Evans.

If those loaded rosters were so much better than ours, why did they also only barely qualify for the playoffs?

We can't compare our team now to the 2004 team, as the game is vastly different these days.

Dube-Lindholm-Toffoli
Mangiapane-Backlund-Pelletier
Duehr-Lewis-AHL Guy

Andersson-Hanifin
Tanev-Weegar
Zadorov-Kylington

Vladar
Wolf

Gets me to about $81 MM
This is so far away from what will happen. We're a conservative franchise that plods along with mediocre moves to slightly improve playoff odds each season.
