Friend of mine works at the CCU (Coronary Care Unit) in Foothills Hospital. They are now admitting patients with H1N1 since the ICU is at capacity. This could get ugly...luckily we demolished 2 hospitals in the 90s.

You'd think with the government seeing this they would look into getting more ventilators. I don't think its going to get better anytime soon.

Not sure where they could go, especially since these patients would all likely need isolation rooms. Also, likely not enough staff available. However, the government refuses to admit that there is a staff shortage (I was present at a speech by our health minister where he pretty much acknowledged this).

It will take a few more days for the results to come back officially, but they sent us home with Tamiflu and the understanding that she has/had some sort of flu, perhaps H1N1.

The precautions they are taking are pretty intense. She was in "isolation" which meant no-one could enter her room or handle her without gloves, gown, mask, and goggles. There were numerous other kids on her unit in the hospital in isolation as well. ER was nutty, we waited for 9 hours to get admitted to a room in the hospital.

One nurse told us that staff levels are already reduced by 30% due to illness. It's one thing to read all the "media-hype", but seeing it firsthand... honestly, it doesn't really feel like hype.
That's great news Peanut. Really glad to hear your little one is on the mend.

That mujst have been pretty tough and nerve wracking for you guys to go through. Hopefully it's all done now and she'll be back to normal soon.

Thanks for the update, Peanut. You know that CP has infiltrated your life when you're driving to work and thinking "I better check that H1N1 thread to see if the kid's ok"...

One thing I don't get. Why aren't all doctors, nurses, and hospital staff in general FORCED to get immunized? I have a co-worker whose girlfriend is a nurse administering the vaccine, but she has not been vaccinated. I don't get that at all. You say staff levels are down 30% due to this thing. Get them all vaccinated!

If you have done any reading on ANY flu vaccine you would understand that it takes 10-14 days to work. The vaccination was given last Monday to us and will take effect this week sometime. It is also not a magic shield! It does not make you invincible! Nurses and doctors DO GET SICK!
Get real...............

I have a friend works in a Medicentre place in Edmonton. He told me that their doctors were told to "get in line with everyone else" when they asked for the H1N1 flu shot.

I heard on the radio this morning that as of yesterday, 121 people have been admitted into Calgary hospitals with severe cases of H1N1.

I fear it will only get worse in the next few weeks.

I hate to say I told you so.... but....

How many of those 121 had health issues beforehand? I wonder how many of those people were turned away because perfectly healthy people got their shots when they weren't high risk.

I've spoke today with two different people who had H1N1, both where young, perfectly healthy guys like me. Both got over it in less than 4 days, and of those days they both agreed only one was really that bad. One of them told me that his symptoms from H1N1 where more mild than the seasonal flu he had last year.

Both of my kids had (pediatrician was 90% certain but did not test for it) H1N1. Our kids had fevers, coughs etc.. but nothing serious and no hospital stay was needed.

We have a family friend in the US and their kid got H1N1, was in critical care for two weeks and Just was released yesterday.

Neither my kids nor theirs had any underlying medical condition. Different people react differently to the virus.

I guess you cannot be certain how "sick" you will get and that is what is really scary.

By the way I did get my shot.

How did they know they had H1N1?

Over what time period?

Week? Month? Year?

That's a good question.

On the radio here last week, they said that 12 people in Vancouver have died from H1N1. Then when I read the actual story in the paper, it was since the beginning of 2009.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say not too many. A buddy of mine (who is far from the picture of health) got it last week and pretty got over it in 3 days, unfortunately he gave it to his inlaws and 2 of the teenagers are now in the hospital. the 14 year old boy was in intensive care for a period but seems to be pulling out of it.

Did any of them go to the hospital? Or just get over it on their own? If the latter how did they know what they had?
