Or maybe the Economist Intelligence Unit knows what it's doing and Maclean's magazine is a clueless rag.
If you follow the link, it says the best thing about Brooks is its internet access. Yeah, that sure sounds like a reason to move there.
‘Internet access’ and ‘amenities’ are weighted equally on the Maclean's list. ‘Population growth’ is listed as a criterion, but transportation isn't considered at all.
And the slaughterhouse. I met a guy that said his job was to boil blood when he was a young fella working there.

24 hours ago if Johnny had to take 1 of 2 options, what would he take?
10.5M x 8 Flames
9.75M x 7 Jackets
There’s no way he takes the Jackets. Sure, it’s closer to the east but it’s not in the east. His family can’t pop by. It’s not a great city and it’s a bad hockey team where players constantly leave. Theres no Stanley Cup within reach. He leaves tons of money on the table and possibly a year of getting paid as most players don’t make it past 37. The only logic is that he didn’t get what he expected from PHI, NJ etc and had to settle. Will be interesting to hear the truth, but it’s not that Gaudreau wanted to go to CBJ.

I've been to nearly every city in North America due to my music career and Calgary is not even close to my first choice...but that's just me and every single person is going to have their own opinion. Many people would disagree with my least favorite city which happens to be New York. I HATE New York. After living in Calgary for a few years I'd say it's just an okay city while also being kind of boring, but again, that's just my opinion. There are many more interesting cities in the US I would gladly choose over Calgary just based off of food, entertainment, beauty, and history, while simultaneously ignoring the violence and bad neighborhoods.
Calgary makes these lists because it isn't violent and it's bad neighborhoods are really not all that bad...but it is kind of boring compared to many of the cities in the States I've visited and doing anything that isn't boring costs 3 times as much.
One huge issue Calgary has is that it tears down most of it's history to build something new that will look dated in 10 years. Also, the worst art piece I've ever seen is in Calgary, but it might also be the reason Markstrom gets as many bagles as he does.
After signing Gaudreau, Columbus is bound to match any sane offer for Laine. Since they can go over the cap by 10% during the offseason, they actually have $11.4 million to spend at the moment.
Disagree, they would be very wise to take unprotected 1st(s) from a team facing a lot of uncertainty. Laine is a mercurial asset and it's hard to pin down his contract value or trade value, anyways.
Yeah, ‘doesn't smell like rotting dead animals’ is not one of Maclean's criteria.
Further to my beautiful Brooks Alberta post, I distinctly remember Sundays the day they filled their tailing ponds. It was a beautiful smell to wake up to every morning
Maybe Johnny didn’t like Jyotis new moronic “climate emergency” that’s going to drive property taxes through the roof, for something that a single municipality can’t ever hope to impact (regardless of how dumb it was to begin with) and he said #### it Columbus is better than this #### hole

But a team facing that kind of uncertainty isn't going to give up 1sts on an offer sheet. And it's quite clear that the Blue Jackets did not sign the top UFA on the market so they could turn around and start tearing their team to pieces.

We could all understand money and family, chance of winning ect.
To hold the Flames hostage and then take less money on a terrible team that really isn't that close to home. I can see why people are kinda pissed. I am one of them.
Did he actually hold the Flames hostage? It took how long for Brad Treliving to give Johnny his “A” offer. Treliving should’ve been more assertive the first time, or better yet, finalize the deal prior to the season. It was close allegedly, but for whatever reason it fell through.
and like I said earlier, no matter what team he was going to, the money was going to be less than what the Flames offered. So money was never the primary reason. Also, all the teams vying for Gaudreau missed the playoffs last season, they were all in the same boat as far as I’m concerned. Lastly, Columbus plays in eastern time zone, so they’re definitely a lot closed to Philly than Calgary is. I remember hearing that Johnny’s mom would have to stay up past her bed time to watch Johnny play. Now, that won’t be the case.
For me, I just don’t understand why going to Columbus has triggered everybody. Like Nassau County is also a pretty far drive for the Gaudreau clan, would we be pissed if he went to the Islanders? I doubt it.
I don’t know, maybe it’s just me. But I was just very indifferent on where he ended up. Columbus, Carolina, Washington, whatever man, thanks for the memories Johnny. I won’t be booing.
I have been trying to decide how I feel about JG leaving, and to be honest I am a bit apathetic - don't really care that he is gone or where he went or why.
Sort of glad that we didn't overpay him for years 4-8 of his contract. And if Mathew is going to follow the same path then time to jetison him as well.
Yeah, ‘doesn't smell like rotting dead animals’ is not one of Maclean's criteria.

Its like the pulp mill in Hinton, Alberta. Some days you can taste it from miles out of town. Gross.

Tre could've offered him 12M and he wouldn't have stayed
