To stop the sniping, I think you could do a lottery system, but that has pitfalls as well if the scalpers just overwhelm the lottery system to give them the highest odds by sheer numbers. .
Why should retailers care though? They get paid the same either way. The onus needs to fall on the impatient #######s who pay scalped prices for consoles. It's not like a concert which is a one time deal, in a few months you'll be able to buy a PS5 without issue once the supply chain issues settle down. There is zero reason to buy a console above retail price unless you're just that entitled that you need to have it NOW

Wait, do you work for ticketmaster or De Beers by chance? How else could someone believe that artificially throttling the supply of an in demand item for the purpose of price gouging is the fault of consumers?

You realize if Sony or Best Buy were doing this, it would be illegal right?

In fact, I can't think of any reason why what these scumbags are doing isn't illegal.

I agree with you, just wait it out.

However I did really want to get my Father in-law the Xbox series X for Christmas. I was not smart enough to pre-order it. Luckily thanks to this thread I was able to secure one from Amazon.

It just one of things that would have been "nice" to have and get somebody for Christmas without having to navigate the world of scalpers or trying to subscribe to notifications where you have seconds to secure your purchase.

I guess I'm naïve and want a nicer world in general, where people are buying things for the enjoyment of it instead of making a profit.

Most of us would but as always a small portion of people will always be fueled by greed. At the end of the day it amounts to having a little more patience to wait another month or two until they are readily available. As a person that owns both consoles there really isn't a lot of content right now that's taking advantage of the new hardware as neither console has a killer app at launch. Demon Souls looks quite nice and I'm enjoying it but I already played the game on PS3. I'm also playing AC Valhalla on One X which is typical AC and while it's pretty at times, it doesn't scream next gen.

Cabbage patch dolls were the first time that I remember this “demand” morphing into scalping products. And even then it was specific ones!

Mid cycle refreshes for consoles seem to be the only time when supply can be manufactured in sufficient quantities. There tends to be more lead time and the technology doesn’t change on the consoles as much.

Sony and Microsoft could have priced the consoles higher to constrict demand, but both vendors want consumers to get the consoles and then drive up attach rates through accessories and subscriptions. That’s where the real profit is.

Also to confirm that the quality of life improvements are great, but I have a One X 4K and graphically the improvements don’t scream next gen (yet). Can confirm that 360 games look amazing.

I'm not defending the scalpers, I think they're scumbags. But if gamers as a whole simply had a bit of patience then those scumbags would be forced to sell their stacks of consoles for retail price and the issue would go away

True, however when these companies decide to drop these new consoles right before the biggest gift giving time of the year it creates a bit more pressure/frenzy. I am sure they know full well what they are doing so there is plenty of blame to go around here.

Herein lies the problem. Despite numerous occasions of getting burned by being impatient (pre-ordering games and getting a crappy/buggy game) they still continue to do it. Impatience is just part of the gamer mentality unfortunately, and as long as it is, people with exploit it.

It is part of human behaviour. In no way is it exclusive or unique to the gaming industry.

Truth is when you have a certain amount of money it just doesn't matter...people blow thousands on a night on the town what is an extra few hundred for something that will give you thousands of hours of enjoyment.

Spend hours hunting for a console Vs. paying a premium and having it now

I’m resigned to just waiting until after Christmas now.
