Guardians had a cool set of likeable characters, and a riveting universe, with well-placed humour. But the story was pretty awful and the villain and his story was forgettable garbage.
People really overrate that movie because of the character chemistry and entertainment value, which overshadows a lot of its warts.
I hope the quality of the next SW films far surpass the quality of GotG.
After the comprehensive victory in Episode 6, how can there still be Stormtroopers, tie-fighters and doomsday machines? Why wasn't the apparatus of the Empire dismantled?

The cantina band was reggae.
They didn't surrender they contracted and probably got ground down.
Remember even with the death of the Empire and destruction of the Death Star 2 and the Executor, that the Imperial Fleet had a massive fleet, thousands of worlds under their sway, probably millions of troops and hundreds of thousands of Storm Troopers.
They probably continued to fight the Rebels and also fight each other for power and leadership, and probably slowly ground down. They probably also faced open rebellion on hundreds of worlds that they had to deal with.
the Empire probably slowly rotted from the inside, lost manufacturing and troop recruitment and at some point they signed the treaty with the Republic, which is what we've seen they agreed for the most part to disarm, very much like the treaty of Versaille.
Either on their own, or with encouragement of Snoke a group of hardcore Imperials moved with their assets to Wildspace and rebuilt their own version of an Empire based around Palpatines philosophies and then emerged when they were sufficiently strong to take on a weak New Republic.

Why would anybody want Lucas involved in any way anymore?
Remember, he's the guy who almost singlehandedly ruined the franchise 15 years ago?
Reading up on the comments here and Wikipedia, it was rumoured that David Fincher was asked to direct this one before JJ Abrams got it, that would have been kinda cool... but whoever they have lined up, I'm sure will do OK.

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.
I think you might have missed the fact that the entire Empire in the original trilogy was not only based on Nazis but also had German military names (Stormtroopers/Stoßtruppen) and most of the costumes were based on recycled German uniform designs.
-edit
Of course we always fall into the trope of conflagrating Nazis with the Wermacht (and other factions) which in many cases were different and held different ideologies and moral standards.
The empire was also speciest in the way the nazis were racist. The empire only accepted humans into their ranks and subjugated the other species.

That's really kind of non canon though. You never saw that in the original trilogy, and in the PT it was pretty clear that the Republic under Palpatine did hings like defending the Wookies.
Palpatine even had non humans in his senior cabinet with Sly Moore and Mas Amenda or whatever his name was.
Palpatine also recruited a clear non human as a apprentice, and Grevious wasn't human.
On the Legends side, while he clearly enslaved races, he also had a senior alien running fleets in Thrawn.
Lets be clear thought Palpatine was the heroic reformer of a broken down republic that was rife with corruption, he clearly had the vision that the Republic had to be cleaned up and destroyed from the inside.

I wonder what people would say about TFA without the star wars mystique attached? The story was nothing special and the villains were pretty 'meh'. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it but let's not kid ourselves, movies like GotG and star wars can't be described as masterpieces... nor can 99% of science fiction if we're being honest. GotG was roughly on par with TFA in my opinion, but didn't get the same hype boost nor did people 'want it to be good'.

Never fear, the Chinese havent had their say yet and Disney has been pimping it hard in China.
Opening weekend here and I just got back from seeing it. Better than I had expected actually. It kept the humour and the sense of adventure of IV-VI without the horrible cheesiness and vapid super hero-like jedi of I-III. I liked pretty much everything about it except for the choice to kill another death star. Theatre was packed on a Sunday evening too.

I have nothing you add of value, except that I went and saw it again. You're welcome, Disney.
After the 3rd viewing, I just can't help thinking Rey is Han and Leias child, and therefore Rens sister. The way Han acts around her and toward her, and the motherly embrace of Rey when they meet.
Two things that solidified my theory was when the low level henchman informs Ren that there was a girl with the escaped droid, and Ren force chokes him in a rage then attacks the computer in a tantrum.
The 2nd thing was when they are on the death star, and Finn says his one and only priority is to save his Rey, and Han tells Finn "don't worry, I promise we'll save the girl" . To me, classic Han would have claimed the girl is not his problem, nor a priority.
And during the flashback scene, it's absolutely Obi Wan's voice.
