There is no where in the world worse than Athens. The entire city apart from some of the "Heritage sites" is a huge ghetto. People think Detroit is a ghetto, go to Athens, what a horrible city. Smells, garbage everywhere, people smell, bad teeth, dirty. Greece for the most part was pretty third world.
For the person commenting on Frankfurt, it isn't all bad, just the train station area (red light district there). Once you get out of the area it is pretty nice.

Taiyuan, in Shanxi province of China is the worst place I've ever been. Lived there for a month. There was nothing wrong with the people there, but the environment was terrible. It's a major coal mining town that has a very small number of extremely rich people, while the rest are mostly very poor. The air is continually thick with pollution and dust blown off the surrounding mountains, which are barren because they have all been stripped for mining. The city is basically controlled by the coal barrens, and nothing is put into city infrastructure. The roads look like the city has experienced a Dresden style bombing, and where there aren't big holes the road may still deteriorate into dirt. Although Beijing would supposedly like to do something about the situation there, nobody from the government is willing to move there and take responsibility (or at least that's what I'm told). This is a picture of it on a 'sunny' late morning:

Ah, but see Livingston is gorgeous. Half an hour from the Gallatin Valley, gateway to Paradise Valley and Yellowstone.
I can certainly imagine some unpleasant circumstances, but at least there is plenty of great scenery around Livingston!

Tijuana was a scary place 18 years ago when I was frequently partaking of its wares. These days, it's about 100X worse.

Utah is great. I think this 'vibe' thing is a myth anyway. I've spent quite a bit of time in Utah and known quite a few Utah-ites and they were some of the most party happy folks I've ever run into.

Our train broke down in the middle of nowhere in Spain. One of those towns where there is a stop, but the train just kind of slows down so people can jump on. Anyhow, there were all these paint huffers hanging out right where our train broke down. THAT was fun!

Winnipeg in the winter is living proof that hell can freeze over. In the summer though, it is a very nice city for about a day. Visit the forks, go to a Goldeyes game (best ballpark in Canada), go for dinner, then go home. Spend any more than one day in Winnipeg and you are just bored.
The Tampa area is interesting. Tampa itself is nice, St. Petersberg is nice. Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Clearwater, all pretty good. Then there is this little suburb in the middle called Oldsmar, which is nothing more than a trailer park. This ugly ass pimple in the middle of a decent metropolis.
And, now that I think about it, I want to change my vote on worst place in Alberta. Valleyview is actually a close second to Clairmont. The Ramada there comes with free bed bugs.

Bologna Italy.
City was great durring the day, University was ultra liberal.
But the McDonalds was next to the train station, I definately lost weight while I was there as the the train station at night was very dodgy as in I am glad to be alive and if I ever go back I wont arrive after 5pm.
Also, South Florida in general, the USPS workers there are crazy

I've only been outside of Vancouver area like 5-6 times and the places I went were all nice so I can't really rip any of the cities, but I was in Cancun, the second you get out of the tourist area, it's pretty sad out there. So I guess I will have to say Cancun, but not the tourist area which is what it's supposed to be.
Oh, Prince George and Quesnel kinda suck as well.

I never heard so many bad things about Italian cities! I've never been and am not from there or anything, I just didn't think it was such a violent place. Why so rough?

90% of the country is beautiful. Even the South. In fact some people prefer the south because the landscape and weather are beautiful, more beautiful than the North in a lot of ways.
It is just that it is poorer in the south. Think of a place like Puerto Vallarta. Nice, but poor. South of Italy is similar but not quite as poor.

Port au Prince, Haiti
The aircraft fly over a shanty town right by the airport. The water near the island is brown from garbage and human waste being dumped into it. No laws against driving with no brakes, steering, or lights. Political infighting and power struggles all the time. A confused mixture of two contrary religions: voodoo and Christianity. Electricity only available in some areas of the country, and it is only intermittent at best, sometimes going 12 hours without any juice (except for generators). So little food that some people in the past have taken to eating dirt so that they no longer feel hungry.
Know what one of the biggest causes of death and injury is in Haiti? Falling off of mountains.... Strange, right? Well, there is very little food, and what little arable land they have is mostly on the sides of mountains, so the people terrace farm on the mountain sides, using tether ropes to get down to the area. But the problem is that there is no money to buy ropes, so people make their own and the ropes often fail to do the job.
And through it all, the people are nice, polite, well-groomed, courteous, and kind.

If people think Winnipeg is hell because of the temperature in the winter and the mosquitos in the summer they would die up here. lol
One place I try to avoid and it's not because of the rivalry it has with The Pas is Flin Flon. Everytime I go there I get a really bad headache which is most likely because of sulpher.
