Morgan Frost just casually putting up decent points too. Those two acquisitions are finding their way offensively now. That's a good thing right?

Are we still going to be bad enough then? I can very easily see this team still fighting hard for points late in the season when others have already checked out, moving up the standings enough to once again miss out on the top picks. It just seems like that's the Flames way.

I think trading Andersson at the deadline can still submarine this anti-tanking manouver even if they win a few more games now.

We already have Backlund, Weegar, Huberdeau, Lomberg.
We don't need almost every player on the roster to be a vet. Keep these 4 and trade the rest.

What is Conroy supposed to do? Accept the bad offers that Friedman says they're apparently getting?

I think the view from some could be:
- The offers aren't going to materially improve from now until the deadline so you should make whatever trade you can now, so that you benefit from the higher pick
- Or that regardless of return the value of improving the pick outweighs the value of the return in the trades.
I think the reality is
- The team isn't going to pull trades just to maximize the pick. I think that's the difference between a re-build and a tank. And this team isn't tanking
- I think the returns for Kadri and Coleman need to be even stronger, for the team to trade them now or this year at all.

Who are the rebuilding experts that say to trade vets no matter what the return, in order to lose on purpose? I want citations.

It is always good to beat the Canucks. Will never get mad at the Flames for beating the Canucks or Oilers. Andersson is really playing well, he is just all over the place right now. I wish I could have heard the exchange between Kane and him that got Kane the 2min unsportsmanlike.
Raise of the glass to Willis and the work he is doing under the circumstances.
I agree that the trades will not happen until the trade deadline. You may get a GM that will try to get ahead of a pack of GMs if there is a player they really like, but no GM is going to give his best offer until his back is up against the wall. Trading a player now would be foolish.

It could happen at the end of January.
Last year nothing really happened until the Trouba trade in December. Then for about a week and half there were some interesting trades and then the trades were pretty meh until the Rantenen/Necas trade.

They're gonna half-ass the tank aren't they?

Yeah 4OA or 5OA gets you terrible players like Cale Makar, Brady Tkachuk, Mitch Marner, Paul Kariya, Jaromir Jagr, Scott Stevens, Blake Wheeler, Carey Price, Lanny Macdonald, Ron Francis, Steve Yzerman

I mentioned in the other thread as well - the Christmas trade freeze is in a few weeks, and unless there's a "can't refuse it" offer, I doubt Conroy screws a vet by doing a trade just beforehand, and messing up the player's Christmas.

Exactly, that late January is also the timeline where Conroy pulled the trigger on Lindholm. It is a bit unique this years, but I do think there will be a few trades that come out before the Olympics, gives the player (if they aren't going) an additional 3 weeks to get things sorted before playing a game.

I am firmly Team Tank, and in fact I've been Team Tank since Tkachuk/Johnny left.
But even I enjoy wins over the Canucks and Oilers.
If we don't cling to the hatred of rivalries, what is the point of even living?

Man what a ####ty timeline we live in where we have to sift through people panicking over wins in a PGT ... over a rival.
Keep the moaning to the other topics.
Just enjoy the damn win.

Morgan Frost is such an interesting player. He has all the skills desired in a top line center - good speed, fantastic puck skills, elusive with the puck, good on face offs, pretty good defensively. Yet, at most he would be considered an ok 2nd line center throughout his career. It’s like the old saying of all the tools but not the toolbox. Maybe that’s a little harsh for him because I do think he is a good player and he’s playing even better lately. Just interesting that a player who makes such elusive/skilled plays with the puck on a nightly basis has never put up big points in the NHL.

Could see this as well depending on the player. For players that are not going to the Olympics (eg. Kadri/Coleman), I think this could be the case. I wonder if teams will want to take the gamble on pushing their chips in early on a player that is going to the Olympics though (eg. Andersson). Would feel pretty frustrating for a team to pay a premium price to acquire a player early and he ends up injured at the Olympics. I know injuries can happen any time but the optics of the player you gave up premium assets for getting injured when not playing for your team are not good.
Of course, there is the flip side of the coin - what if that player has a fantastic performance at the Olympics before he ever traded - that might end up increasing his acquisition cost post-Olympics.

I dunno. he's good, but he's just a little smaller than most top centres, he's just a littler slower than the McDavids and Mackinnons, and doesn't have the scoring of a Draisatil or Matthews. Of the 1Cs in the league you could look at Suzuki as a comparison I guess.
