How hard is it to follow 2 simple rules?
1. Minimum 18
2. Divide your age + 7
|
You're attempting the Friends rule. Half+7 round down, the formula applied to both directions of any given relationship basically comes out to these as acceptable dating ages.
11 too young to date
12 - 12
13 - 13
14 - 14/15 is acceptable.
15 - 14-17
16 - 15-19
17 - 15-21
18 - 16-23
19 - 16-25
20 - 17-27
21 - 17-29
I'm not sure its universally prefect, especially at 17 years old, but its actually pretty close to what feels OK to me. I know when I was 19 I technically dated a 17 year old, for a month or two, because I was 14 months older than my girlfriend at the time. I really don't see something like that as problematic, so there is certainly a line especially in that 16-17 year old age range that age of consent could use a little be more grey area than OK or not OK, I actually really wouldn't mind seeing a more nuanced age of mutual consent rule like that legislated, rather than just drawing a solid line at 16 or 18.

A lot of jurisdictions have ‘Romeo and Juliet’ exceptions where it isn't statutory rape if both partners are within a certain age range of each other. A difference of less than three years is typically considered legally acceptable.

I don't care what the law says, it's a man preying on a child. It's gross.

… and you… right?
I don’t think the poster mentioned the law. But what Kesler did does seem to be against it given the legal trouble he’s in.

Just a classic lack of judgement for a 40 year old man.

Exactly. That's what I'm thinking too. 100%
It's sexual contact, not sexual penetration.

It's your opinion that it's gross.
It's a fact that it's not illegal.
Whatever Kesler did (and I suppose we will find out the details in due course), it was more than simply a grown man doing something sexual with a 16- or 17-year-old. The bits reported so far make it clear that she did not consent, which makes it a crime regardless of her age. The fact that you regard it as icky makes no difference to the authorities involved and will not matter to a judge.

So you support 40 year old men sexually exploiting 16 year old girls? Thanks for letting us know. That is also gross.

Did I say that? No, I said it was not illegal. Whether it is gross or not is a separate question. But it seems I can trust you, as you so often do, to put the worst interpretation on what someone says, and then blow a gasket over what you imagine they meant.

Kesler sucks. I hated him as a player and was always sure he was a delta bravo off-ice.
BUT:
-we don't know what he allegedly did
-nothing has been proven in the courts
So lets stop talking as if he is 100% guilty, should be in jail, is a pedo, etc.
We know nothing.
After the Hockey Canada trial, you would think some people would learn to not jump to conclusions.
(PS - Again, Kesler sucks. I don't care if bad things happen to him as he likely deserves it. I just don't like painting the accused as guilty without more information.)

You are saying it my opinion it is gross and disagreeing with me. How else would anyone take that? I am not blowing a gasket at all. You are defending actions by bringing up age of consent. You never said you thought it was wrong or disagreed with it.

I don't think it's clear the victim was a minor

So you think the victim was handicapped? I mean the law is pretty clear it's either that or a minor.

Could have been drunk, passed out, sleeping, etc. Incapacitated is super vague
It could also be forced or coerced touching. Like shes standing there and he grabs her _____. Or he puts her hand on his junk.
It's a misdemeanor charge.

Absolutely wrong. I am saying that your opinion that it is gross is irrelevant to whether or not it is illegal. Nothing more, nothing less. Get over yourself.
And yes, when you start accusing me of being in favour of sexual abuse of children, you damned well ARE blowing a gasket.

I didn't accuse you of anything, I questioned you on if you thought it was ok. Look at what you posted. Everybody was saying they thought it was wrong and grois and then out of the blue you come out with age of consent and that it is irrelevant if we think it's gross or wrong. You don't anywhere say you think it is wrong yourself. If people are having a conversation where someone says I think it's gross if a 40 year old is sexually inappropriate with a 16 year old and your response is it doesn't matter if you think its gross, it's age of consent how does any normal person take that? You are literally defending the actions of the 40 year old by wording it that way and not prefacing it with the fact you disagree with it. So I didn't accuse you of anything, you worded your list to see if anyone would take the bait. I'm not interested man and I am not blowing a gasket when I ask you if you believe what you literally wrote. Like I said, if I misread your post which I went back and looked and I clearly did not then I apologize but maybe don't accuse others of being wrong for being upset at the age difference because the law says it's ok and not expect some questioning there. Nobody was talking about she of consent until you brought it up.

Katie Strang's tweet from yesterday that was posted earlier in the thread says her age is in the complaint and she was 16.
