No doubt, and the hope is an upgrade on Cooley.

I would give the edge to Prosvetov over Cooley for the back up job. I think Prosvetov is on the same level as Vladar.

Conroy all but confirms this signing, but is still waiting for the final paperwork.

It sounds like the plan now is to go into the season with Prosvetov and Cooley fighting for the backup position.

Does Dustin Wolf have the lowest NHL salary of all the Flames goalies?

No, Wolf's at $850,000 and Cooley is $775,000.

It's funny that Sergeev and Say both have higher cap hits than Wolf (although theirs both include performance bonuses that they're unlikely to receive).

Dustin Wolf (71) has more than twice as many NHL games played than Devin Cooley and Ivan Prosvetov combined (6 + 24).

Depth is good. Between him and Cooley - and I guess, to be fair, and outside shot with Sergeev though I would think the plan is for him to develop at the AHL level - there should be a decent enough backup for Wolf. A bit of a gamble going with one of the league's least experienced tandems this season, but I like it.

It is kind of funny that our Calder runner-up from this season is now the team's most experienced goalie. I am a little surprised that they didn't sign a more veteran goalie back up. I am guessing that they see some potential in Prosvetov as an asset than just a stop gap.

Either that or they're really prepared to go for a dive this season.

I like how a CP member with almost no post history whatsoever completely nailed this rumour over a month ago, way before any of the professional insiders.

He very clearly is Prosvetov. So not only is Prosvetov a Flame now, he's also a poster on CP.

Good times.

I liked how Steinberg mentioned on the radio today that Prosvetov was first linked to the Flames "a month ago".

This thread is the only place that he was linked to the Flames .

I like this signing, he's a good goalie, still young and I think while he obviously hasn't accomplished what Vladar has that he has a high ceiling if it all comes together

The Flames have 5 goalies under contract (Wolf, Cooley, Prosvetov, Say, and Sergeev) for a combined cap hit of $4,313,750.

That's less than a million more than what Vladar's cap hit will be next season, and less than $200,000 more than Markstrom's cap hit next season.

No matter which two goalies currently under contract for next season start the season in the NHL, their combined cap hit will be less than what the Flames are paying in retained salary on Markstrom's deal.
