That's a false dichotomy.
To me, if there were a binary, it'd be closer to:
Cheering for long term success and accepting short term failure
versus
cheering for short term success and accepting long term failure
Of course there are countless other permutations of results based on getting absurdly lucky, but this is the real argument.
It's been nice to watch Wolf have a great rookie season, and it's been nice to see Parekh dominate junior hockey. But this team's hole in terms of a number one center has existed for... my... entire.... lifetime. I'm just numb to the insanity of doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Dunno about that. Flames are playing (generously) at .600 so with 10 games left that's all of 12 points...gets them to 92. At best.
STL and MIN both have 87 points and 7 and 8 GR respectively. They'd both have to play below .500 to get us in... if we can maintain .600. If we can't...toast. VAN ain't much better than us, so likely a non-factor.

Kadri needs some help. None is coming from the farm.

The dream, a 10 year burn it down rebuild that would take us to near Marner’s retirement.

Season isn't over yet at all, but tonight's lost point, given having a lead with 6 mins to go, has to be finished out. They now really need at a minimum 1 point vs Colorado.
For the first time, after tonight, in a long time, they no longer hold their own destiny in their hands for the playoffs and need some help to get in. Not much help, but still help. They would need more help if they can't get any points Monday.

If you don't think Marner, a game breaker player, wouldn't be a great addition, I don't know what to tell you.
He will never sign in CGY, so I'm not thinking about it. But i think you'd be crazy to not make the phone call if he hits free agency.
|
Sure, adding a gambreaker sounds like a good addition. How much and for how long? He isn't a premium position. You already have Huberdeau at 10.5. Marner turns 28 in May - do you want to sign him through his 35 year old season?
It is repeating the same mistakes as the last rebuild - going out and making deals thinking you are better than you really are. Flames didn't come close to competing for the cup in the last rebuild. You add a guy like Marner when you are ready to compete. Adding Marner now just makes them another bubble team.
I guess if you feel that the Flames are a better team right now than I do, and you feel they are ready to compete, then I guess we will agree to disagree.

That’s why retools don’t work especially when you have zero elite talent outside of the goalie. Who are they retooling around ?
Someone mentioned Conory believes the team will be competing in 2 years lol. They are ready to trade 1st round picks for the right player.

Teams can go on heaters. It happens all the time. They don't even need to run the table to make it. So it's not as unrealistic as you think.
Is it likely? Of course not. Everyone knows that.
But I don't get the throwing in of the towel at this point by this fan base.

I’m just glad I put Michaels on mute as soon as they came up the ice.
Been sitting in silence since.
Been a very hard 2 games.
I get way too invested. I shouldn’t because the anger is not good for my health.

If you swap Parekh in for Bean next season and he figures out the NHL then I think the offense opens up a bunch from a puck moving Dman.

I think most people would accept short term pain for a better draft position this season
But again how do you do that?
Not play Wolf?
You don’t just decide to lose.

We have zero talent outside of our goalie and a few 2nd liners on a good team.
We do not have any 1st line forwards. Realistically, we are 5 years out minimum from contending. With the perfect drafting and signings.

"Frustrated that the Flames' chances of making the playoffs are almost completely gone, because they just lost a game where they had a late 3rd period lead and would have won if they had shut down one player = cheering for the team to lose and fail" is a rather delusional and unserious take.

I watched the entire game on mute (with the exception of the delay bc I didn't know what was happening). My usual approach on a Coiler game regardless of PbP personnel.

Brutal loss. Was a great road game until they took the foot off the gas late. Would have been nice to at least win the season series for the first time in years with or without the playoffs.
Appropriate it ended 3 on 3 given that is the only difference between the Flames and Oilers this year.
