He got the new arena to make more millions from. I don't see him leaving.
It would be amazing if he did sell his share.

In the last 25 years we really have only had 3 GMs, with Feaster and Burke keeping the seat warm. Sutter was not really a good GM. Treliving is the perfect example of a Canadian GM trying to fast forward a rebuild (with picks and money). In his 2nd year traded 1st and 2 2nds for Hamilton. 3rd year traded 2 2nds and a 3rd for Elliot, Stone and Lazar. In his 4th he traded a 1st, 2 2nds and a 3rd for Mike Smith and Hamonic.
As I mentioned, and time will tell, but Conroy as a GM seems to be bucking that. His first couple years he has shown that he is sticking to his plan and getting picks rather than spending. I think the 2nd is the biggest pick so far. His splash in UFA has been Mantha. Clearly the paths the last couple GMs have taken are opposite.

There is one constant over these last 20 years. We can question the individual capability of each GM, but the direction is ultimately set by Edwards.
This is on Edwards. It always has been.

IIRC, a media insider said the same thing.
I don’t know what it will take to convince some fans that for the last 20 years the strategic direction and major decisions of the franchise are set by Edwards, not the GM.

That’s just showing up for class. Might get you a C, perhaps a B on a good year, but it takes more than showing up to get an A. I also suspect, in the Flames case, spending to the cap has been bit of a smokescreen as far as appearances go. ‘See, we’re trying!’…..no you’re not.

I imagine it like the movie Major League behind the scenes as far as facilities.
Calgarians are held hostage by the guy for winter entertainment, and worse he makes it their fault, not his for under investing in his products.

WE had cap space by design. The free agent class sucked big time, the big winners of free agency are below us in the standings.
They had cap space opens for a few reasons. Absorb a bad contract for a year for some assets or have space to pounce on a player available.
It did seem he was open to moving the picks but the right players didn't come along and likely wont.

Exactly. On Paper this team was never supposed to compete. we should be around Buffalo and Nashville, but Wolf is kick ass.

We also met at their offices in BH, in a meeting room that was around 40C because "the HVAC was messed up and this was only meeting room available". Uh huh.
As it turns out, they signed our agreement instead, but in the last round of negotiations we signed theirs. That clause is now gone in their standard agreement.
When re-negotiations happened, we invited them to our offices, and I kept them in the meeting room for six hours and farted the entire time.

I had some interactions on the business side with the Flames org, and I would say the interactions isn't that different than those CNRL interactions.
I have resigned myself to the fact that the Flames most likely will not be successful on the ice until there is a change in ownership and the way they conduct their business from a corporate perspective.

So basically the Flames mean nothing, we just live here and support them because we want to support a local team. They are are just a crappy local business that has a monopoly on something you really want, NHL hockey.
Flames are an inconsequential team. Why would anyone that doesn't have to, pick them as a favorite team? The glory years are so far in the past. They are the Tottenham Hotspur of hockey.

Call it 35 years of mediocrity all you like, and justifiably so. I still think it's a better alternative than cheering for Montreal, Toronto, or Vancouver.

If you think about it, being a fan of a sports team is fairly illogical.

Yeah, I should have green texted it but basically that.
It’s been the same product for 30 years. I dont know why people bother bringing ownership up. Accept it or go follow something else.

Not sure about the Spurs comment, but I had this same internal debate when I had my son. The kicker was I don't live in Calgary anymore, so who does my boy cheer for one day?
...my answer was to let him choose and with chatGPT and some disney level allegory one day he'll wonder why a pig named Edward M is the bad guy in all his stories.

Different business models...
CNRL sells a fungible product, a barrel of oil or volume of gas are kind of the same outside of API / heating value. Their customers are buying a raw product based on price. So lowest extraction price wins.
An entertainment experience is completely different. Who wants lowest production value entertainment? You have to invest in your customers experience to grow your share of wallet and revenue. Our ownership group is ill equipped for this type of business in my opinion.
Direct example:
Fernie has sold zero lots from their latest land release.
Revelstoke...Northland Properties (Dallas Stars owner) is doing far better with their development.

That does not appear to be true. About half the teams spend to the cap, the other half do not.

(just edit the year in the table for a different year)

Nah...it's just people whining about an owner they can do nothing about. Think Galen Weston and Loblaws Cos.
But nobody has an emotional tie to THEM.
