Kind of like when he just gave Huberdeau the Gaudreau Contract.

haha, the old "I was soooooo close to getting Rantanen" from Tre. Classic.
Turning around and moving two of those assets for Brandon Carlo makes it even funnier. Holy overpayment, Tre.

Yep. He hasn't changed a bit or learned anything from his mistakes as Flames GM. Other teams trading for difference makers while he spends a king's ransom on two depth players. Leafs deserve him.

What value would people put on Bahl? Comparable to Carlo?

Carlo has more offence, but Bahl is much younger and (for the moment) much cheaper. I'd put a higher value on Bahl than Carlo. If he weren't a Flame already, he'd be the kind of player Conroy would be looking to add.

Carlo is still an effective player. But damn, Treliving overpaying again.

It’s these additions that cause fans to lose their minds. And teams to stagnate.
What if marner walks and the leafs have injuries? Bottom 10 is a definite possibility…and it’s not far from 10 to 6. In a strong draft year.
I know, I know. “It’s a process”.

To be fair they were coming off identical seasons point wise. They also both drooped big time after.

Kind of makes the Markstrom trade look even better, doesn't it?

As of now, the Maple Leafs won’t be picking in the first round again until Backlund is 39 and Wolf is 27. Treliving signature asset discipline.

Is there any team that needs playoff success more than the Leafs? They don't care about picks, and the only reason they've cared about prospects is that they were cheap

I bet Fraser Minten becomes a stud for Boston and ends up scoring tons of goals vs Toronto because the hockey gods always like to punish the Leafs in the most hilarious ways possible.

Almost all contenders are in the same boat. After the success of TB, VKG, and FLA, the league’s managers have become much more aggressive.
Quote:
According to PuckPedia, top teams have traded 14 first-round picks throughout this season, nearly double the total of a year ago. In the aftermath of Friday's big selloff, the Lightning don't have a first-round pick in 2025, 2026 or 2027. Same for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Edmonton Oilers, Florida Panthers and Vegas Golden Knights all lack first-rounders in the next two seasons, as well.
That's a group that includes the five teams with the best odds to win the Stanley Cup this year — and seven of the top 10.
It's a carpe diem mindset that makes a lot of sense, especially in a league where the draft is kind of a crapshoot outside of top 10 picks and parity is so high among the contenders that even adding a Bjorkstrand or two late in the season can be enough to separate from the herd.

Minten is a good prospect, but most people seem to think he will top out as #3 C at best. His offensive stats have not been overly impressive at any level.
Still a high price for a declining defensive blueliner.

re: Cliff's first rounder post above. interesting trends for sure
particularly interesting (I think I'm about right here but open to correction) that interestingly the 2 teams with no first rounders for the next 3 years have about a 75% chance of facing off in round 1, not that different for Col and Dal in the no firsts x2 club
go big or go home of course, winning the cup is the objective and only one team gets there. eventually if nothing else these teams lose their chips to keep doing this one would think
