I don't think that sharing a border with Russia instead of the U.S. is a bonus.

Even before the draft, there was a clear language issue and it was identified as an issue by him self.

And for some people it's more difficult than for others. Part of it is the work you put in to it, but I also think some people just have a better aptitude for it. It seems like the difficulty gradient between Finnish and English is particularly hard.

How much English did he need when he was with the Oilers?
"Pass puck to Connor."
"Where is pizza."
"Kleenex? No thank you."
"Sorry officer. I thought this was urinal."

On top of everything in Edmonton, I do remember some noise about McDavid telling the coach that he doesn't want Puljujarvi on his line ever. Not sure if that rumour was ever true or not, but if so, shows you exactly how difficult it must have been for him to adjust, never mind develop.

He may not have learned a lot of English while in Edmonton but he did learn this:
Edmonton ei ole jumala.

I assumed he had a deal in Europe for the rest of the year, but he signed a PTO with the Charlotte Checkers (Florida's farm team)

"Edmonton is not a god". Is how that translates. Sure, it's factual, but the correct translation would be Edmonton ei ole hyvä.
