I am holding out hope, for the reasons stated above. While small in stature, he doesn't lack competitive fire, and could conceivably be able to fill a bottom-6 role if needed- he isn't bound to be a "top-6 or bust" type.

All hype, no snipe.
ok is a little tragic given his draft position (draft position needs to be weighed heavily here) but he's a legit NHLer. there are others we can quibble about but the group of Nemisz, Irving, Krahn, Chucko and Pelech and their COMBINED 44 games say hi

Bennett is trending towards a thousand game career

Yeah, and it’s not like the guys picked directly after him came anywhere close to his career. You had to go four back to Nylander to find someone better.

But who knows, maybe DK is a big Virtanafan.

Who did you want? Dal Colle or Virtanen?

Didn't have strong opinions at the time other than drafting another C when you had Mony and Backlund was beyond idiotic. Furthermore, I only moved to Calgary in 2007 and I was under the impression that draft picks were something you used to trade for players at the TDL.

Always go C when they have the potential to be your top line guy.

Monny and Bennett that was going to be the 1-2 punch down the middle. Backlund the perfect 3rd line C.

What could have been.

Amen.

The Flames would have had a good shot at Matthews running Bennett at 2C.

First, I just wanted to point out that I'm not taking shots at Wolf, I was just trying to explain why I have a hard time voting for goalies. I don't mind the discussion, and I apologize if I'm derailing the thread a bit. Here are the reasons I mentioned those names:

Ortio - Treliving went into a season with 3 goalies just so Ortio wouldn't have to go through waivers. I remember discussions on CP saying he will be Kipper's heir. He made his first appearance on the CP rankings as number 30 in 2013, but went up the rankings before finishing 5th in 2015.

McDonald - He was definitely a whiff of a pick, and he was never rated high on CP. That said, when he was drafted, there was a lot of talk and hype about him being the first goalie drafted that year. Him going ahead of Demko, etc. It seemed our scouts were really high on the guy.

Parsons - Winning the Memorial cup, then going through the 2017 world juniors, being a star for the Americans. Winning gold in the process. He was very highly touted here, and for good reason. He was ranked as high as 2nd in our prospect rankings in 2017. He finished ahead of a lot of NHL regulars: Andersson, Fox, Mangiapane, Kylington, Kulak, plus Rittich, Lomberg, and Dube.

Rittich/Vladar - I remember fans being very high on them when they started playing with the big squad. Especially Big Save Dave, that eventually took the starter role for a year, but then came back down to earth. Vladar was seen as a shrewd move by many, because he was stuck behind 2 better goalies in BOS. The $2M bridge deal also seemed like it could turn into a value contract, but hasn't taken the next step just yet.

Brossiot - He was a good pick, I was just upset he was traded at the time, I think he only got around 5 games that year before getting traded. We simply had too many goalies in the AHL that year: Ortio, Berra, Dell, Joey McDonald, Doug Carr, and Brossoit. My point was that the Flames had the hardest time developing and picking goalies. Even when they had them in the system, the goalie had to move to another organization before carving out an NHL career for himself. The same argument applies to McBackup IMO.

Gillies - He was constantly around #3-4 on the CP prospect rankings, and I had high hopes for the guy as well. People were saying he had franchise goalie potential as well. Unfortunately, as you said, injuries derailed his career.

Irving/Krahn - the reason I mentioned them was mostly draft pedigree. Both had high expectations due to being 1st round draft picks.
