Even if they didn't land Tkachuk, Jeff Marek had stated on 32 thoughts podcast a couple years back that the Flames were high on Keller. In other words, they still would have made a very successful pick. But Treliving is a idiot and would have undoubtedley screwed that up too.

Also believed the Oilers were going to take Tkachuk until Pulijarvi became available (LOL).

lol yeah that is what broke the trade I believe. They got word on how the draft would go because Oilers would take Pulijarvi and I think everyone knew Benning was locked on Juloevi.

It’s pretty much what Burke said. I think Matthew wanted to be a Flame and the Flames wanted him as their #1 target.

Sucks how things played out, but we still got 6 years out of him and 2 of our best seasons in franchise history.

I was wrong about the player. He is a superstar and probably was the glue of the team.

He is going to do the exact same thing to Toronto.

Really? I thought he fooled and shocked everyone, I think there were about 15,000 "whos" at the draft party in Rogers Arena.

What do you mean by lowball? Is there any evidence that Tkachuk was as good as gone once he signed that contract and if that is accurate why didn’t they trade him right then anyway?

I don’t think it’s quite as clear as you like to think it is, with the benefit of hindsight, no less.

You’re also assuming that Tkachuk would have been happy to stay for more money and more term. That’s pretty speculative.

Look!

Tkachuk was coming off of 77 pt season, even without my source telling me his agent was stuck on 8x$8.5 Tkachuk himself has publicly stated he wanted a long term contract and plus said Treliving wanted to keep Frolik and the team together so the higher cap hit didn't work and convinced him on 5.5-7-9m bridge to do so.

We may not ever know if Gaudreau leaving had anything to do with Tkachuk telling Treliving he wouldn't sign an extension but what we do know is Tkachuk held Thors hammer and Treliving gave it to him, it was dumb period.

Sure, but you’re conflating two things. The bridge deal is not the reason Tkachuk left. Did Treliving know he handed Tkachuk the hammer, as you put it, yes I bet he did. Say what you will but he’s not stupid. Treliving would have known the risk but he didn’t know about global pandemic, the Muzzin fiasco, or how things would play out between the player and a HOF (likely) coach.

Tkachuk leaving, I’d bet, had to do with a number of things including but not limited to his contractual status,, geography, age, relationships with the coach and teammates, and the growing advantage teams, tax free and otherwise, have in the US.

Had the Flames and Tkachuk signed that 8x8.5, who knows what happens, but I don’t think it’s a gaurantee he’s still a Flame today.

…or is it any gaurantee that the Flames are in a better position and legitimate cup contenders today? Bear in mind, that team had their heads handed to them by an Oilers team that was worse then than it is today.

Everyone except Treliving and his apologists knew.

I believe most of the people here knew Tkachuk won and he was going to walk the moment that contract was signed

Fun game.

Flames should trade Dustin Wolf right now. He’s American, you know?

Call me crazy but I feel like tkachuk would return here *if* we are a contending team when his contract expires.

At the Stampede / Cowboys wearing a cowboy hat on the first official night... you can take Chucky out of Calgary, but you can't take Calgary out of Chucky.

100%. He truly hates the Oilers and nothing better than to beat the Oilers as a Flame.

Tkachuk always wanted to play in the States and the rumors of him wanting to be in a US market go back several years before it happened. I think it's probably the least likely reunion of almost any former Flame

Tkachuk has always been an 'open book.'

He learned from his dad. Pro Sports is not a 'Career' its an Opportunity.

The guy is a pure Mercenary. Sure, maybe he likes some places more than others, but he goes where he gets paid. Pure and simple.

And theres nothing wrong with that. If anything its respectable because its honest. Everyone knows where everyone stands.

Treliving refused to pay up. The Merc then left.

This wasn't Rocket Science. Treliving is just an abject idiot.

Yeah, Tkachuk cares about winning. Sure. But look at his brother. Is his brother looking at a Championship? A Stanley Cup? Or a paycheque?

Their motivations are obvious and clear, and as I said, theres a respectability to that, furthermore, if you pay them they will devote themselves and give 100%. But as a GM you can't ignore that and Treliving did.

Because he's an idiot.

But there are no secrets here, no insidious motives. They're good hockey players and they will play their hearts out for you.

If you pay them.

Its very simple.

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve had that same sense since the moment the Flames drafted him. His Dad was a Merc and the boys paid attention.

Almost all professional athletes are mercenaries. I mean, it’s kind of the job.
