Kuznetsov cannot play at this point as he has only been cleared to practice.
Also, he is being assigned to Hershey and not staying in DC.

Does mangiapane for kuznetsov plus (not one for one) make any sense? Gives us a pivot down the middle and puts sharongovich back to wing.
Probably a guy you don’t want around the young guys but would fit a need at c. Again unlikely but if nothing else a discussion point.

They're going to have to pay someone to take Kuznetsov off their hands.

That makes absolutely no sense. Trade a completely underrated 5v5 producer for a guy who is totally washed.

I’d rather they just trade him at the deadline next year

Yeah I’m not a huge Mangipane fan but that’s a terrible trade. Conroy would be laughed at for doing that.

Puke. Huberdeau is coming around and can mentor the young guys.

Once the Caps pay his 2 million dollar signing bonus on July 1, they might be able to off him to a San Jose or Chicago with a mediocre sweetener.

It would require more than a mediocre sweetener to take on $6m of cash and $8M of cap on a player who may not be a NHL player anymore.

Unless you point out what the plus is, it’s really a rhetorical question.
As it would need to be a huge plus. Your big boy.

But why? That seems like a terrible deal.
Kuznetsov might rebound, but thats a man-sized 'If' and you dont get any value for Hanifin?

If he is clean and sober, he may be the next Monahan - get an asset for him to clear the cap space for Washington, and then trade him at next season's deadline for more assets. One more year left.
I wouldn't hate it if the Flames took that risk for a 1st - that's exactly the type of moves I would want the Flames to use their cap space on during this retool. I am not convinced that they will get anything else after that 1st - he may be done. However, it is worth the first in my opinion, though I am not sure that Washington - given their overall lack of prospects - would be inclined to do so. They just might stick him in the AHL and leave it at that, as this is all about Ovechkin next season.

Nashville was able to off Johanssen for nothing but eating half his salary for two seasons. So if the Caps eat half and pay the bonus, they might get off with only giving up like a 2nd.
No way I'd be taking him on. But lots of people here seem to think he'll be worth a lot next deadline. I don't...but I could be wrong.

If you could get them to pay the Monahan price, it might be worth the gamble. I think that’s what folks are suggesting. Monetize the cap space, and get a 1st in 2026 or whatever.

What everyone forgets is that last year Monahan was worthless. Had he signed with say Columbus in the offseason for 1.9 than Montreal doesn't get 2 firsts its only 1.
If you can get Kuz 50% retained with a first, I'm sure someone might do it. But I expect Washington might be a bit leery. They're two years as a 8 seed, and two years out with an old roster. So I doubt they want to give their first to off him. Plus this offseason will be very different than 2022 summer. Almost every team will have space to add players.
