Last year a bunch of the talking heads had this team pegged as a cup contender. Things went wrong, in every conceivable way, and now they're looked at like the Coyotes?

They got younger, faster, new coaches, new outlook, etc.

They'll surprise. But maybe they shouldn't as in the year on, year off string of things this is a year on.

The Flames are more or less rolling out the same team, so we should expect the same results.

So, another 17 SOL/OTLs this year? That seems unlikely.

The flames might sneak into the playoffs, or they might miss by a little.
I don't know if the Flames have the scoring depth to raise their game.

Another point worth making if the Flames were very lucky to avoid any serious injury last season, I know it felt like a lot went wrong, but the rosters problem was a skill issue not a luck issue.

That said, after the regular season ends, I am all aboard the playoff optimism train, because thats the most fun way to watch hockey.

From 21-22 the team went from a team that paced at 80pts and jumped to 111. That team lost their captain and top Dman in Gio and replaced him with Coleman, Zadorov, and Gudbransen. Talent wise that was not a 30+ point improvement.

Also as a fan of this te how can you post their results should be the same. When in the last 10 years have the Flames really had similar years back to back? Maybe the 2 Covid shortened years? This team has been up and down for a decade and I do not expect the trend to stop this year

I honestly think this is the best team we've had in a decade plus.

More about whether everyone can hit their potential and get some luck.

Just miss or just make the playoffs I figure. Typical Flames stuff. I don’t even care as long as it’s an entertaining product because last year’s garbage wasn’t worth the effort to sit through a game

We all get way too caught up in age, contracts and a lack of elite talent.

But when you actually have a look at this roster and remove some bias, this is actually a pretty good team. They should absolutely make the playoffs.

I would say baseline is a playoff mid-seed. With potential to swing low with some bad luck and could also swing high to a division title with some career performances and some luck around them (other teams underperforming)

And were unlucky that a bunch of their top players all underperformed in the same season.

Because the question is asking us to predict how they will do, not what we want to happen.

If it was asking us what we want to happen, then of course the cup. But predictions and desires are two different things.

It is like when you buy a lottery ticket. Your desire is to win the lottery, but you would have to be insane to predict that you will win. Someone predicting that they would win would act according, quitting their job when they buy the ticket. Instead we hope we win, but predict that we will not win so we keep our jobs.

The odds of a cup are obviously much better than winning a lottery, but the same principles apply. We can have fun making long predictions, and see how close these predictions are to the actual outcome, while still hoping our predictions are wrong and they outperform them.

The big difference will be in coaching. It will be a drastically different style of play this year.

This is the divide. People who think coaching was the problem are optimistic, people who think the roster was the problem are pessimistic.

The truth is somewhere in the middle.

Maybe Huska can squeeze the most out of this group, but looking up and down the lineup it's difficult to say where out goals are going to come from outside of 2/3 key players.

Put me down for one of them first or second round exits.

I feel like they've got some very tough opposition to play their way into the playoffs against; if the Kings' goaltending situation surprises (for the better) it's going to be a grind.

Frank on Barn Burner said it well just now. Quite literally, every single thing that could have gone wrong last year did, and we still only missed the playoffs by 3 points.

That is remarkable. I think our historically bad tending will improve, our speed is much better, the system should be improved, special teams, and most of all it won't be a toxic environment where players and I quote "Did not want to come to the arena". Those mind games Sutter played for no damn reason destroyed any chemistry/passion the players had.

With the factors, I say the Flames are a playoff team. People can complain about how this team is built for the long-term, and those concerns are fair, but as of this season... we should be a good team.

I'd be surprised if we don't make the playoffs. Winning a round is completely TBD.

I hate making predictions, but when I do I go bullish all the way. Might as well. A more positive feeling in the room and 'no excuses' bounce back seasons for several obvious individuals, I suppose anything could happen.

My guess a bubble team right till the end of the season, it could go either way.

Just making it, or just missing the playoffs

Pre-season doesn’t mean anything. None of the games right now matter at all.
