I dislike how much Maloney is still around. That guy needs to get put to pasture.

The president of hockey operations shouldn't be around the rest of hockey operations?

What a bizarre thing to say.

He's a dinosaur with a dinosaur's opinions on how to run a hockey club. His comments after treliving left have not been followed through on. His demeanor and attitude is old school. And he's from a culture of losing.

Disagree all you want but this guy shouldnt be ghouling around our franchise anymore imo.

yea its a little to early to say nothing he said has been followed up on.

The trade market is being held up by Karlsson and DeBrinkat.

Once those two dominoes fall I think we will start to see more trades.

Fresh new GM rather than an established name off the pile? Check.

Fresh new head coach rather than an established name off the pile? Check.

Seemingly leaving spots open for new, young faces in camp? Check.

Maloney is not the GM, but he has delivered on what he talked about.

New GM done. A coach who is going to preach more offence done. Insert more young guys in the lineup, Flames sign zero vets done.

He even admitted he isn't the person to lead the team as GM and he wanted fresh ideas.

Not sure what else you want from him.

If he isn't around the team people will complain hes being paid to sleep and vacation.

Yeah I don't understand how people can say that Maloney hasn't done what he said he was going to do in the 2 months since being hired.

He's actually being a very steadying presence around the team IMO.

And with a rookie GM I think you want some experience around him.

Group 1 done:

Coronato clearly a step ahead of everyone, looked really good out there and looks faster this year which is great to see.
Stromgren looks leaner to me, he has really silky hands especially in close, would love to see him on the wranglers, I think he’s ready.
Boltmann looks good, better than I think I’ve given him credit for.
Morin just oozes hockey sense and IQ he was consistent and quick but also deceptive. A good 2way game but clearly loves to push the offence

2 invites (I think) that stood out to me were Peer for the forwards, the guy was very fast with elite edge work and elusiveness and good hands. Don’t know much about him.
Prokop on D was very strong on the stick and great defensively, didn’t see anyone get by him on the 1-1 drills.

Goalies seemed okay, nothing stood out for either of them.
Sergeev made some great cross crease saves on 1 timers but he’s very small in the net, he looks very very lean for a goalie but I know he’s young.

Very little contact today, no checking drills at all.

Was nice to see Stone out there working with the D, he was also very humble and took time to sign some autographs and take some pictures with the kids.

Valji on the other hand scooped a puck that went over the glass and kept it, lol puking toss it to the kids who were asking. He gets the E=NG award today.

I’ll answer/write more when I get home, just a few notes on the phone so far.

Low contact today,

On the subject of Maloney, did anyone catch the amusing exchange between him and Button when Honzek got up on stage (might have been mentioned in another thread)? He looked irritated at Button for where everyone was standing or something…gave me real “man’s wife of 40 years annoyed at where her husband parked the Buick” vibes.

He moved him out of the way aggressively so he and Conroy could pose for the picture beside Honzek.

It was quite odd and humorous at the same time.

The second angle of it that I saw it appeared that Maloney was trying to get Button to stand next to Honzek (or at least closer to him).

Excellent stuff Royle, thanks for taking the time to share.

Morin is exciting, feels like a potential home run. Very curious how Honzek looks out there as well.

Saw the second session

Neat to see Danielle Fujitsu working with some of the prospects on their skating and transitions

I didn’t watch too many players particularly closely, but sure picked up some good drills for next year!

Honzek has a really good shot, nice release. They did some drills where coaches sent pucks around the boards, and he seemed to have room for improvement picking them up and controlling. Maybe some bad luck with the rims. But the shot was noticeably among the top in the group

Kydd also stood out as having a pretty good release, he had some good snipes. Also got pucks past the goalies a few times but hit iron. (Nothing to shoot at!)

Both the goalies with AHL contracts looked decent (Murphy and Radomsky). Vayrynen seemed to have a bit of room for development sealing up the bottom of the net.

Group 2:

Unfortuantely I had to step out for some work calls (OF COURSE) and ended up missing a good chunk of group 2, but I'll be sure to focus on this group tomorrow.

With that said first and foremost I will humbly apologize for being so hard on Honzek when he was drafted, the guy is NOTHING like Hunter Smith or Kanzig in terms of big=good=actually bad. In my limited viewing he stood out immediately in terms of skill and speed coupled with size.

Honzek was out early with 3 other members from group 2 :Ronni, Ciona & Kuznetsov
They were working entirely on skating with the skating coach and then the goalies were on the other end.

His skating is definitely top notch, yes his stride is a bit odd/unique but he's deceptively quick/rangy and his first few strides easily separate him from the other 4 on the ice. His range of mobility is what stood out immediately, you can see he's got room to grow for sure but he doesn't look out of place. If anything, him adding another 15lbs of muscle scares me, he could turn into a bonified power forward we haven't seen since Iggy. His balance is crazy for a guy his size, his agility is clearly there as well and I 100% see why Craig was laughing when he got to walk up and draft this guy at 16.

Egg on my face, but I accept it.
I am firmly excited to see this kid grow.

More updates tomorrow - Apologies again for the terrible group 2 coverage, perhaps someone else was there and could add. With that said, thanks for the kind words! I'm more than happy to share my point of view both tomorrow and Saturday hopefully!

Awesome to see the write-ups Royale9.

How busy is it there today? Thinking I might head down tomorrow, as downtown is pretty much shut down.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.
