i would say the exodus pretty much proves it. Maybe backs and Lindy didn’t like huby and kahdri just walking in? Hard to say but personally i was waiting to see who wanted out and it isnt the new guys so far. I think that says a lot.

Toffoli’s best friend Looch is gone, so there’s no reason to stay here.

I think the two main reasons would be Sutter being let go and the big cap raise in 2024. These guys are going to want to take advantage of UFA with teams ready to blow their brains out with extra cap.

How does Toffoli say he is open to anywhere mean there is locker room discord. He has no trade protection so by default he is open to going anywhere and by saying he is open minded he is already setting the stage for a bigger UFA contract. If it leaks he is LA or bust then he is signing a discounted deal.

Selling Backlund and Toffoli at their likely career highs is a no brainer.
The questionable part is management seemingly offering them contracts. Hopefully lowballs.

I appreciate that we are all being optimistic about the big haul the Flames will get from this mass exodus. The positivity is nice to see.
But this is a massive embarrassment for the franchise and for Calgary. We are a laughingstock, again. Only a year after Sutter re-established credibility for this franchise.
We thought Sutter was the problem. I guess not. Tre is gone too. Who’s left? What is driving this?
Leadership in the organization needs to take a look in the mirror and figure out why this is happening.

I don’t really think so. So a few guys want out, whatever. Calgary is still a tremendous city that will eventually build an awesome team and Calgary will have an unreal new building to boot. I highly doubt anybody is “laughing” at Calgary unless it’s Oiler fans, but they’re idiots anyway so who cares.
People move on from businesses all the time. Pretty normal.

I don't know if they're a laughing stock, but they certainly aren't a contender. Players don't want to play here. The rink sucks and they have a new GM and new coach.
Calgary doesn't have McDavid, or any star players for that matter.
I think it will be a rough couple of years for Flames fans.

We just missed the playoffs. Anyone thinking we were contending this year is the foolish one.
Mid 30 year vets want to leave a team making a re-tool. Not exactly shocking.

I don't think it's a laughing stock situation. Sports is more fluid than most workplace situations, by it's nature. Imagine you came into the office and your boss was a total dick for a full year. Now imagine the boss gets fired. Upper management or ownership fully knew of the nonsense taking place but only actioned the firing because it risked their reputation or performance of those individuals. So they didn't do it as it was happening, and that should say a lot about the people in the power positions (including Treliving). I don't care what anyone says, if Sutter was being that public in his actions, upper management was turning a blind eye. So now these are the employees way of saying "when my contract is over I have no obligation to be here". Good for them. I'll like the organization because of tradition, but someone up there dropped the ball royally letting Sutter do his thing. My guess it's just the players giving it back now to someone upstairs.

Massive embarrassment always strikes me as an odd reaction. I would only be embarrassed if I followed a team that did immoral things such that I felt I could no longer back them.
Otherwise I'm never embarrassed by the teams I follow. Because it's just a game.
When I start getting those types of negative emotions I will re-evaluate if I should continue to be a fan.
Until then, enjoy the ride.

I think this is all driven by Gaudreau and Tkachuk leaving. That set back the franchise. Adding Huberdeau and Weegar for Tkachuk should have helped but everything fell apart. There was a lot of negativity and even though Sutter, the major source of the negativity, is gone the franchise is now on the wrong side of being a top contender. There is probably some fallout of players who sided with Sutter vs player who didn't but the writing is on the wall that this team needs to rebuild/retool instead of trying to ensure playoffs every year.

To me this is more of a blessing in disguise than a “massive embarrassment”.
I’m enjoying this ride! I would actually be disappointed now if things change and they do re-sign…bring on a retool/rebuild/recalibration…whatever you wanna call it

I'm one of the few people who believed running it back with fresh management and bench leadership would have yielded a potential division championship.
That said, if all these players want out then I am entirely on board with a rebuild/retool that makes the team younger and hungrier.
Totally ready for change. Let's ####ing do it.

I dont disagree with you but that was a different era of hockey. The clutch and grab era was terrible hockey if you had a bad or young team.
If you took the 90’s “Young Guns” roster and put it into todays NHL, I think it’d be quite entertaining. Val Bure scored 70 points during the clutch and grab, what could he do in todays NHL? Flames had Stillman, Savard, Iginla, Morris. St. Louis might have even found success in Calgary. That’s 5 highly skilled forwards right there that would rival the best young players in todays game.

Frankly I'm more excited about the team with all these subtractions than I am had they all stayed.
Lets see what these players turn into and lets go.

Not sure why some of you are scratching your head on why these guys want out. Because the team is going down the drain and no one wants to play in Calgary if the team sucks.
