I thought DeSimone actually looked alright for the most part. No worse than anyone else has over the past 5 games. Made some nice reads and plays and had a couple of mistakes. Not a bad first game really.

Essentially missing 3 d men in front of him so that is not terrible for depth. No team in the league has that many NHL ready defensemen after losing 3 starters.

Yup.

You take two top 4 dmen and the 7th dmen out of any lineup and you're going to have some issues, no matter what team you are.

It'd be like taking Byram, Toews, and MacDermid out of the Avs defense.

All of a sudden Makar, Girard, Manson, Johnson, MacDonald, Hunt doesn't look like the best d-corps in the league anymore.

Stone was our number 7 and Valimaki was our #9. Really we are down 2 regulars.

I know it was mentioned probably cap related but I would have thought Meloche after 50 NHL games last year and signed on the first day? Of free agency would have been higher on call up list

Why Kylington isn't on LTIR is very perplexing

Exactly, the amount of teams able to hide players for fun drives me crazy. Yet we cannot even excuse a guy from the cap when he legit is not in North America.

He is also saying some others haven't taken a step forward either though since training camp.

#7 is a regular, unless you are hoping to go injury-free all season.

We don't really have a #1 (Weegar and Hanifin are both arguably top-pairing guys, but neither is a #1), Andersson is the closest thing to a #1, but isn't really. I would argue Tanev is the most important, because he holds things together defensively, and allows everyone else to do their thing. So we are missing:

#1 Tanev
#5 Kylington
#7 Stone
#9 Valimaki (lost to waivers)

And we are currently running with: #2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10 (though I would call Meloche #10)

However you want to label them, it is definitely testing our depth. Imagine if we had traded Hanifin, we would currently be looking at:

Weegar - Andersson
Mackey - Zadorov
Gilbert - DeSimone

and that would be the 2nd worst defensive group in the NHL.

Trading one of the top 4 would have meant keeping Valimaki.

True. Doesn't make it look any better.

Sure, but getting Tanev, Kylly, and Stone back suddenly makes the D group look just fine.

Any team would have a bad looking blue line when 3 of their regulars are out.

They're not over the cap yet. You can only use LTIR to exceed the cap.

I heard on the radio (yesterday), Flames didn't recall Meloche as they lacked the cap space...

But then they won't be accruing cap space anymore either, which at the deadline, could be significant enough to a pretty big acquisition if they keep accruing it. I am not sure the difference between Meloche and the other guys is significant enough to warrant it.

Based on when the players were cut, I would have thought the first call up would be Meloche from AHL

Meloche has played 57 games in the NHL

No idea on the difference between Gilbert, Meloche and DeSimone

Meloche could only come up if Mackey went down (or if 2 players go down)

Yeah. They probably don’t want to risk only having 6 dmen on a road trip so needed to call up both Gilbert and DeSimone. If we are at home and the Wranglers are too, I can see Meloche getting the call up. Same with if Tanev Or Stone are ready to go. Is Stone on the trip or is he in Calgary?
