I'm sure its one of those things that if I heard a song I would know it but don't know the artist, I don't listen top the radio at all I have a youtube music playlist I listen to everyday so don't hear a lot of different music. Obviously they are bigger name artists i'm not saying I don't know them to knock them, its definitely me.
Is it that surprising? It’s not like guns n roses is music that appeals to anyone who didn’t grow up with it really. Which is basically any music of a different time.
I'm 44 years old and I have heard of Carly Rae Jepsen but not Alessia Cara. It shouldn't be surprising people my age or older don't know these people.
I'm 42 and know them both. But that's also because my daughter loved Moana and listened to How Far I'll Go all the time, which is sung by Alessia Cara. Then I just recognize her voice in all her other songs
Not to triple post.. But does anybody else feel sorry for the kids that came of age in the 2010s (particularly the latter half) and grew up on the generally terrible music of today?
There are always exceptions and as far as mainstream, artists like The Weeknd and The Chainsmokers put out some solid tracks that weren't just like everything else out there at the time, but BOY has the general quality of music taken a dive.
Just like social media, all the artists with any kind of following just make a carbon copy of what every one else is doing (goddamn trap-style music) and don't bother to come with something of their own.
The quality of lyrics and writing has also regressed to where there is no thought, story or poetry in half the music out there. Often there isn't even a cohesive collection of words.
It's like some artists are singing a bad drunk text that a friend send them.

Older person doesn’t like new music and doesn’t understand why kids like it.
I’m shocked.

Every era has crap music.
I've been listening to the Billboard top hits by year on Spotify, and christ there's some real junk in every year.

One thing that isn't talked about much though is that music keeps adding songs decade after decade while having finite chords and lyrics. You can really see it today when listening to new music.
Yes, there was always bad music and good music, but it gets increasingly harder and harder to create original music that doesn't infringe on other songs and lyrics and it becomes more noticeable with each passing decade, imo.

I don’t really think this is true. Used to be that artists could get famous by doing covers. Most artists that were huge 40+ years ago borrowed, evolved, or straight up stole music from other artists.
Humans have been telling stories and making music for thousands and thousands of years. We aren’t just suddenly running out. You’ve just heard enough over time where you can start recognising the influences.

I think there are 3 main factors that creatively separate the modern era (2000+) from the "classic" (30s-90s, jazz to EDM) eras of music:
1. Music is cheap and easy to access now, kids don't value it like they used to. Before you had to pay good money or wait on the radio to hear a song you liked.
2. It's really hard to get gigs and opportunities are extremely limited for learning musicians. In-house bands used to be the norm, but have been largely replaced by good PA systems.
3. The modern era can no longer rely on technical innovation to gain access to new sounds that drive innovation and make their era unique.
The modern era is great for a lot of things, like making niche music really accessible, plus the resources available to modern musicians is staggering. But the days of music being iconic and integral to a generations identity are probably over. Kids don't value it and don't see opportunity in it anywhere near like they used to, that's gonna make a big difference.
