We will never know, but I doubt it

Habs should tell JK they are going to match.

Then throw his gear into the landfill, deactivate his pass to the building, and then wait until the seven days pass while doing nothing.

I'm referring towards the $20 vs. Aho offer sheet.

Its clearly a shot at the Habs

He is going to get hundreds of questions around this...

Why not accept the contract at $6.1m with a larger bonus ...
…because he probably doesn’t want to be a Hab anymore.

Oh I agree, thus it will be interesting if the Habs accept the offer sheet.

If I recall, offer sheet has only been successful one time

As funny as this is, it seems pretty ill thought out for Carolina. They should have thanked the Canadiens for helping them get Aho under contract.

The Habs should not match and take the picks.

lol, some people asking why he would sign this offer sheet, or that he needed extra motivation to sign it?

Haha

He signed it because it was $6 million and now he has a $6 million QO next off season or he'll be a free agent. And he's maybe worth $2 million right now, tops.

THAT is why he signed it.

a $20 signing bonus is a small FU when you compare it to Aho's contract where 91% of the contract is paid out in signing bonuses.

The canes had to write a $11.3 mil cheque or 26% of the total contract's value to Aho as soon as they matched the contract

True, Aho however is an elite talent.

Totally different situations...

Yikes, that's like throwing egg on the face of his current team.
Realistically, what was he going to get from the Habs? 3 years at $2M per? They tripled his salary in one year. And whats worse, he's qualifying offer next year is set at even higher. So he has all the incentive in the world to sign this.and let's not forget, he was a healthy scratch for parts of the regular season. There's definitely no love lost between him and the Habs.

Is Kotkaniemi worth a 2nd pick at 6.1 M Cap hit

That becomes a salary dump for Montreal.

What would the Flames be prepared to give for Kotkanemi and his 6.1 cap hit and QO coming up next year? Not much more than a 2nd round pick I would think.

Why a 2nd round pick?

Compensation is a 1st and 3rd.

I think the point is he is worth a 2nd or less at that salary so it’s no brainer to take the first and 3rd. If Montreal let’s him go and Carolina looks to trade him I’m not sure I’d trade much for him and his future QO issues.

If Montreal matches this it goes to show nhl gms might rank the worst in all of sports.

Huge mistake in my opinion
For 3.5 million over your current value, you don’t agree to a $20 signing bonus?

Remember that one of the rules for offer sheets is if the Habs match, they can't trade him for 1 year from the date they notify the league of their decision.

They can't match it then flip him just to screw over the Canes.

At 6.1 M he is un flippable.

Right now the Flames would likely trade Monahan for a 1st and 3rd. Monahan at 6.375 is just nominally over what Kotkaniemi is at 6.1 and QO.

Monahan playing injured put up 28 pts. Kotkaniemi put up 20.

Really what would the Flames give up for a 6.1 M Kotkaniemi? Not Dube or Valimaki or even Andersson.

Does this have any impact on the Habs going after Eichel?

Are they more likely now because they lost a centre or are they less likely because JK was likely their best bargaining chip?
