I wonder how many points $30MM in cap space will score next year?
Bad draft by Seattle. I get leaving $10-20MM, but I smell an absolute horrendous Landeskog signing coming (or other hilarious terri-bad UFA signing with all that "cap space").
Cap space can be wildly overrated too. Which, pending the quality of picks coming back- it seems to be here.

He has negative value. Best to stay clear of that contract.

They better be good, because Francis is looking like an idiot right now. Brutal roster. But hey, he’s got $30M to play with. Big question is, who will be dumb enough to saddle themselves with that roster?

This would be the perfect time for a guy like Stamkos to grab their next contract even. I think lots are scared of the challeng also.

Geekie shouldn't have any problems clearing waivers.

Bean's the much more valuable piece no matter how you slice it.

TBH I'm not sure how they will do. They are deeper than us on D and RW. I can see their strategy here. They avoided 30 year olds with term, other than Eberle and Gourde. I think Francis was very conservative, not wanting to take a chance on players with fat contracts that could maybe get a "change of scenery" boost.

Remember Feaster saying they were going to be able to take advantage of other cap strapped teams?

Based on the tweets about no expansion deal trades but trades for players that were picked I wonder if they’re not stretching the first statement a bit. For example, what if Francis said to Carolina “I am picking Bean”, and they said “Please don’t, take Geekie” and he said “fine, but then the next day you have to trade me Neideraiter for Adam Larsson.”

I like what they did, didn't take any boat anchor contracts that will hand cuff them in the future and the 30MM in cap space is a huge deal. Plenty of teams are going to struggle to get under the cap, that's when you get value for taking some of these contracts.
Pretty sure Tampa is going to have to give up a first to unload someone from their team going forward.

I am wondering if Seattle is planning on signing Hamilton and not picking Bean is a good will move. Seeing as everyone already has permission to speak to Hamilton's camp it wouldn't be tampering either.

If they wheel this off, its getting after it. They're going to try and make it a hot spot direct against Vegas.

I still can’t believe there were no deals to stay away from players and that he actually just picked some of the players they picked.
Cap space is valuable for sure. But you could have gotten great value by taking a guy like Gostisbehere and flipping him with salary retained.
I think they could have taken 1-2 more big contracts and would have still had $20M+ to play with.

We'll see if there were any side deals, but you have to think that Tarasenko's value must be pretty low of the Kraken didn't even want him for free to use as trade bait.

Considering that there’s not many great players left in UFA, and they aren’t likely to get the best ones, they definitely would have been better off taking some more talent through this only opportunity they had to raid other rosters uncontrolled.
Yes they have cap space, and that can be weaponized, but the last few years have shown that GMs are creative enough to get around their own cap issues without involving other teams.
They appear to have the goalies they want, and the top defenseman that they want, but could use top forwards, but there’s very few top UFA forwards available, and those aren’t going to Seattle.
Teams aren’t going to trade Vegas top players just for nothing, and Seattle doesn’t have many assets now to even make that happen. They don’t have any good depth players to trade, and they aren’t in a position to trade picks.

They can still be a 3rd party in a trade to retain salary for assets. They’re going to be very very careful with their cap room though.

BUT
They have a 30M in cap space.
They can do whatever they want with that kind of flexibility.
Todays roster is a loooong way from being finalized.
I think its a brilliant strategy moving into draft weekend.
|
Flames have 20M in cap space!
Seattle’s brilliant strategy is only really only 3 over 2 our lesser brilliant strategy!
