For the last 3 seasons this team has had:
Lindholm: 5th overall
Monahan: 6th overall
Bennett: 4th overall
Hanifin: 5th overall
Tkachuk: 6th overall
Talent from the top end of the draft hasn’t been an issue for this team, and doesn’t guarantee success.
I said it in a different thread but blowing it up and drafting early can help, but still requires a lot of luck.
If Toews doesn’t fall to 3rd overall behind Johnson and Staal then Chicago might not win a cup at all.
If Edmonton doesn’t win the lottery and picks Strome or Hanifin at 3rd overall instead of being gifted McDavid they probably still would be the worst team in the league.
Key is to draft well no matter where you’re picking, and make sure youre developing those players well (Hello Sam Bennett).
That’s easier at the top of the draft but even Tampa last year doesn’t necessarily win because of Stamkos or Hedman, they win because of picks like Point, Kucherov, and Cirelli. Stamkos didn’t even play in the playoffs really.
Good drafting is the key to success in the NHL but I don’t think it necessarily means you need to pick top 3 for 5 years. Flames biggest issue hasn’t been draft position IMO, it’s been that they wasted too many picks in the Hamonic, Lazar, Elliott, etc deals.

Imagine if the St. Louis Blues treated Alex Pietrangelo that way for the first seven years of his career.

Horrible asset management.

Well, they had no picks in 2018, and there’s really only a handful of players who’ve played significant games from that draft anyway. Only 5 guys from 2019 have played over 25 games. Only 4 players from 2020 have set foot in the NHL.
If you go through the teams in the league, there’s very few I’d consider to have “graduated” (i.e. had more than a cup of coffee in the NHL) more than 1 and quite a few haven’t graduated any since 2017, just like Calgary.

That... isn't the top end of the draft, though.
Lindholm and Monahan? The top end of that draft was MacKinnon, Barkov and Jones. Those two are a clear tier below.
Bennett? I love the guy but he was taken after Draisaitl and Ekblad. Even if he hits his ceiling in Florida, no one in 2014 would have said his ceiling would be on par with a Norris level defenseman or a Hart winning center.
Hanifin? In a draft with Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel? I'm not even convinced he's a better defenseman than Chabot, Provorov, or Werenski who were taken after him, never mind the actual top end of that draft.
Tkachuk? I love the guy but he was taken after Auston Matthews.
A team with Auston Matthews, Sasha Barkov, and Aaron Ekblad is far better off today, than the Calgary Flames. And that's still assuming we make the playoffs in the fluke year that was 2015.
THEN you add in all the talented other guys we've drafted, the Brodie, Gaudreau types, and you have a contender, probably.

That includes Seattle.
Can still catch Arizona (3 points ahead) and Chicago (4 point ahead) to lower our draft position even more.
Yay?

Well Arizona doesn't have a 1st round pick so really Calgary can only move down one spot. People can probably calm down a little on this point.

There is probably a good chance the Flames select the same player in the 9-12 spot

I cant wait for us to trade down twice and gain a few late round picks in order to snag "our guy" aka a winger with no outstanding skillset

Come now.
Connor Zary is a natural center with no outstanding skillset.
He'll only be a winger after we force him to be one.

Guarantee me Mercer will be better. Or Lapierre. Zary looked pretty good in his AHL stint.

I can't, of course.
And I hope Zary is a Backlund and not a Klimchuk/Poirier/Jankowski/Baertschi/Neimitz when it's all said and done.
But the Capitals' draft history in the late first round... Carlson, Kuznetsov, Vrana, Samsonov, Burakovsky... suggests maybe Lapierre (who I wanted, BTW) will turn out more successfully.
Only time shall tell.
