My guess is Sprong doesn’t make it past Buffalo.

Botterill was in Pittsburgh when they drafted him.

What actual humans are going to play for the Oilers? I didnt think they really had the luxury of waiving anyone.

In a sort of Flames connection, Buffalo’s cuts mean John Gilmour has made the opening night roster (at least until we hear healthy).

I'd prefer this to signing MacDonald if they think Dube & Kylington need more AHL time. Djoos has middle pairing upside and would also give the Flames the D depth they always seem to covet now for free instead of spending a pick at the deadline like last year.

They're down to Caves and Bears, I'm expecting a player named Spatula to join them.

This is the time that teams are waiving guys that they may want to send down later in the year. They will have already cleared.

If that is the case, I'm happy for him. I had been surprised when the flames had not signed him out of college.

There has been chatter about attitude issues with Sprong, but nothing at the level of Ho-Sang
The main criticisms of Sprong have been consistency and the fact that he is largely a perimeter player.
He's got some high end skill in some areas, but is a very incomplete player.

Analysis wise Djoos seems like he performs pretty well in a sheltered role against weak competition, which is realistically what we need. Not sure they want that cap hit though for a #6 guy

I think if we don’t add a D men now then Treliving will inevitably spend a pick on one later in the year. He values depth at that position for playoffs

Baertschi
Goldobin
Sprong
DeSmith
Ho Sang
Djoos

Some intriguing names there that should all get picked up.

Not surprised to see Quine go to Stockton, but I think he's shown enough that he should be the first forward called up. It was interesting to see him being interviewed by Ryan Leslie during the first intermission on Saturday night; I could tell they didn't really get into specifics about staying in Calgary and where he might play, and just talked generally about "starting the season".
I personally think Czarnik is done developing. I also think Dube has done all the developing he can in the AHL and would be served better in the NHL.

Ottawa can pick up two of these guys and see a significant improvement on their bottom line.

I feel worse for Lazar than Sven. I liked Lazar’s attitude and it seems clear this is the very end of his NHL career. I disliked Sven’s attitude and I think he has a decent chance of coming back somewhere.

If by "later in the year" you mean "between now and October 30", then sure.

But to be more accurate, very few of these guys will find themselves on NHL rosters on opening night if they go unclaimed.

I think Sven's next stop is Europe.

I think it's more about too many bodies and not enough roster spots and he was outplayed by better two-way forwards (i.e. Adam Gaudette).

Vancouver's cap troubles would be when Roussel is healthly and he comes off IR.

That's fair. I guess it just goes to show that one has to take advantage of every opportunity, even if it's spotty.

Or another guy Buffalo could look at.

Kruger would probably be familiar with him from his days in the Swiss program.

I wouldn't mind if the Flames took a flyer on Goldobin. He's always had first-line talent, but has had questionable intensity. According to HockeyDB, he's a left hand shot playing RW, so, if the flames can get him to commit, it would really add to the team and screw over the Canucks.
