I'll put it this way: we've had worse efforts in which we scored 5+ more goals.
Everything but finish.

3 goals on 24 shots, took a stupid penalty at a bad time and was absolutley swimming on the killer goal. He is not good enough for a team that wants to make a run.

Nah he panicked and it needed to happen. Good call to play it, but when you’re out that far, with no D around, that’s gotta go hard off the boards.

Leaving Rittich in wouldn't have changed the outcome

0 effort defensively all night. Every goal the sharks scored was way too easy, and it's because the effort wasn't there.
1st goal Rittich is napping, easy
2nd goal Brodie is even with Burns and then gives up and cheats for the outlet pass, easy
3rd goal Monahan couldn't care less about backchecking, then Hamonic just forgets that Hertl is in front of the net, easy
4th goal Brodie is picking his nose and Kane gets two chances, forwards are nowhere to be seen, easy
5th goal Ryan and Lindholm don't pick up their guy at all, easy
They thought they could show up and outskill them to win (and they usually can, they are very good)

Did you even see the replay of the penalty? he didn't even touch him, ref thought he saw something that didn't actually happen
its bizzaroland and I am defending Smith tonight

This. I don't fault Peters for pulling Rittich tonight but never liked Smith starting in Washington.
Rittich was fully rested after the All Star break. He could have played back to back games because there was another long break to get rested again after the two road games.

Agree but it is again the timing of the goals. It happens quite often to him, nearly every game. A deflator or two per game mixed with good goaltending in the end is a poor performance.
These types of goals happen routinely which doesn’t happen with the other guy. He’s just all over the place and that penalty in the 3rd was a prime example.
Look not saying Flames win tonight if he played exceptionally. SJ got lucky. It happens. It just is his body of work this season that means he has not earned the right to ride along any longer. He’s a net liability.

One other point, I thought Prout had a very good game. Was strong on the pinch and made several strong plays. Perfectly acceptable number 6.

On the Flip Side, Glen Gulutzan last year left Rittich in for a game he allowed seven (!) without a pull.
When in doubt, do whatever GG would not do.

The only team in the west that scares me is San Jose. Evander Kane owns the Flames for some reason. Hopefully they get someone else and the Sharks get crushed in the first round.

My guess is Smith's record first game back historically after all star breaks is a lot better then Rittich's.
You can tell from this game that Peters has a pulse on Rittich. Starting him after that long break is much more of an unknown then Smith, and then you have a dilemma on who to put in fro Carolina two days later.

If his head wasn’t in the game, he wouldn’t have made the right choice to play the puck at the blue line. Bad bounce, but not what you said.
I understand the pull to a point but the first wasn’t that brutal either for reasons stated earlier.
Rittich’s leash being so much shorter than Smith’s, given two ugly but remotely understandable goals, is bizarre. Bad optics.

I get the completely opposite take of Mr Franny.
I think losing this game will be a good thing. A turning point!
Where we go back to giving it 100% and being responsible and not cheating.
Then head into the end of the season on fire, on the way to the cup.
