Leafs are easily the best young team in the league.
If a vet like Marleau can help along the way, then they they are good. I have my doubts, but they have incredible talent.

It probably had something to do with getting salary off the books as well. NYI is preparing to take on a +$12 m cap hit with Tavares's extension next year.
In the end, I think they were loathe to trade with TO; especially in the light of how strong the Leafs could look heading into this season.

It doesn't really matter what the owners come up with, they'll immediate find ways to circumvent it.

JVR and a first couldn't land Hamonic. He's a complimentary player, and a good one, but I wouldn't blow my brains out to get him.
They're pretty much a cap team right now, next year they lose 8 forwards and a blueliner to UFA, 3 RFA forwards including Marner. Then the year after that they have their Armageddon moment Mathews and Marner as their big contracts and they'll still have another year of Marleau.
It almost looks like they're going to rebuild most of their roster next year.
I didn't realize that the Leafs were almost in worse shape then the Oilers.

Why? He's not very good. Chiasson isn't an upgrade on anybody.

Don't like this.
Marleau is still good and he's still got his wheels, but this contract is no good.
Way too much money that doesn't take into account that he could fall off the cliff at anytime. NMC really sucks too.

That's the thing... people are saying that a cap floor team would happily take him for the 3rd year, after the bonus is paid. But why on earth would he wave his NMC to go to a basement dweller for $1.something M for his final season?
Better to retire and let the Leafs deal with it.

unless he picks up an allergy to his equipment of course ... I could see that becoming a bit of an epidemic if the NHL doesn't stamp it out...

Leafs will still get the $6.25 mil cap hit, but they can/will probably trade it to a team like the Coyotes who need to reach the floor or have lots of cap space
Welcome to the new era of cap cheating contracts.

What is the impact on escrow?
Do players have to put a % of their bonus into escrow? If not, do his teammates need to put in a higher percentage??

Oh, very funny...
I wish the Leafs hadn't done this deal in the first place. Finger, Clarkson, now this. Granted, this isn't anywhere as bad as those previous two are but still...####

Pretty surprised to see him leave San Jose. This was probably the premium required to get him to move. At this point 25 goals and 50 points are high water for Marleau. But the Leafs have the money and likely do need some leadership for their young guys. Pricey though.

Wow, I really wanted Marleau to retire a Shark, but I would have KILLED Wilson if he offer that deal. Goodbye Patty!
Sure, TOR overpaid BADLY, but they are getting someone that can really help their team. He's still a good player, but more important, he was an elite level 18 year old when he broke into the league and made the team. He works he ass off to maintain his level of competition. He hasn't missed a game in 8 years. He a boring, mild mannered NHL star - JUST what TOR wants their young stars to become. EDM sure could have used a guy like this 5 years ago.
Also... if SJ had a BAD year (entirely not impossible the way the division is shaping up), Thornton could be a trade deadline acquisition for TOR as the go for the cup.
Of course, it sure would be fun to watch the whole thing unravel and TOR implodes. Everyone gets fired and Patty returns to SJ in a throw-away trade - one can dream...

All money is subject to escrow. I don't know how they calculate the percentages for bonus money since most of the numbers used to calculate escrow aren't fully known yet on July 1. They likely use whatever percentage was in place at the end of the previous season.

Wonder if Andrew Walker will break out his "Marlo" schtick again?

I'm not sure this will work out for the Leafs. Marleau is still a good player but is not getting any better and the Leafs are going to need all the cap room they can handle when Matthews, Marner, and Nylander are due contracts.
The biggest loser are the Sharks though. I can see why they didn't want to sign him to this crazy contract but they are a much worse off team today. Unless they can pull off a rumoured trade for Duchene they will be nothing but a mediocre playoff bubble team.

He's a good 4th liner and better than all of Hathaway/Lazar/Brouwer.

I wonder how much this cemented a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Anyone who plays in Toronto tends to get a huge boost
