I also greatly enjoy the clickbait style story titles for each story. Lame site.

I dunno, this team has a good young core that got to the playoffs with a terrible start and below average goaltending.
If management feels Jankowski has what it takes to be at least a solid 3C going forward, and has a plan in place to acquire a good goalie, I can't see how you wouldn't do that trade if WASH was willing.
You also have to have a plan to clear a bit of salary, and need to make sure Ovy isn't bolting to the Olympics, but this team shoots right into legit cup contender status for the next 4 seasons if you add Ovechkin and the only thing of substance from last years roster you lose is Bennett.
Most likely BS anyways, but I'm just saying.

if Benett's the centerpiece in an Ovi trade I would do it, I'm higher on Jankowski than most so I don't see it as leaving a hole in the lineup as I think janko could tally 30-40 pts next year. You get Ovi and you are immidiatly contending and trading Bennett is worth that. I don't believe Ovi wouldn't want to come to Calgary, people forget this man is from Russia it's not like he hasn't lived in a similar climate. That being said these rumours have zero credence so I'm not even gonna think about it at all until someone with some credibility reports on it. Click bait for now but fun to discuss.

Bennett in my opinion is not viewed as the future 3C on this team but if he is then yes management should make the move. I personally feel that Bennett is the only guy on our roster that can challenge Monahan for the number 1 spot.
Kylington also has immense upside and that trade could easily blow up in Calgary's face. Personally I don't see any team that wants Ovie offering up a package that includes a 21 year old centre that was 4th overall and will only cost ~$2.5M, a 19 year old smooth skating Dman with 2 years in the AHL, and multiple 1sts. The Caps get $7M in cap space in the deal, reload on prospects and get a good centre off the bat.
I feel if the Caps wanted to land young star building blocks they needed to make the trade 2-3 years ago when Ovie was still in his 20's. 33 goals and 69pts are solid numbers for someone making $6.5M not $9.5M

Jankowski could replace Bennett next year but what about 3-4 years from now? Bennett has upside and a mean streak that would be silly for Calgary to trade away. Move Backlund all day before moving Bennett.
Bennett plays a style that teams win with. Ovi is great but my at the cost of our highest ever draft choice

Of course Bennett isn't viewed as the future 3C. But we already have a really good #1 and #2 so it's possible they could view him as expendable if they believe Janko will be AT LEAST a 3C going forward (maybe even more) and they want to get the team into the "running" stage starting next year which Ovechkin would certainly do, but Bennett wouldn't.
Of course Kylington has immense upside. If the Flames actually made an offer to the Caps for Ovy, they aren't going to offer them scraps.

I doubt Ovi will be traded. It would be nice but his price tag and what we have to give up for him makes me hesitant on the idea of us getting him.

The offer in the rumorbreak tweet gives the Caps more than Ovi's current worth. I think some people view his value based off the past. I don't think he carries much more value than Kessel at this point and he was moved (salary retained) for a couple nice prospects, a pick and cap dump.
I think Bennett could break out for 50-60pts next year. Too soon for the Flames to cut bait but if they did he should not be traded for a 32 year old making $9.5M
Caps come out of that deal with $7M in cap space (assume Bennett signs for $2.5) they get a 21 year old former top 4 pick coming off a typical sophomore slump, a solid D prospect and multiple 1sts. Way too much for an aging winger. This isn't a top Dman or centre here this is a winger that is the 4th highest cap hit in the league and could not get his team beyond the 2nd round throughout his prime

That tweet referenced the Russian newspaper, not the other way around. Where there's smoke there's fire?
Either way, this was a fun day of imagining what could be

We're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one I guess.
This a 6'3" 240lbs man who skates like the wind, hits like a mack truck and scores 33 goals in a "down" season. 6 Richard's and 3 Hart's. The greatest goal scorer of our generation.
I'm ok giving up a few futures for the legit opportunity to have this team go from the walking stage to the running stage over the next 4 seasons. Plus, 4 years from now, the only member s of the Flames current core who would be 30 or older are Gio, Backlund and Brodie (who would be just turning 30), so it wouldn't be the last of our opportunity to compete. We'd STILL have a strong core at that point to retool with.
Although, I have to reiterate, I'd be scared ####less of the Russian factor, and the Olympics and all that.

As much as the hole in the top RW spot is open, infinitely more important is the big hole in net. Acquiring OV does not instantly put the Flames into contention, make us a contender or even guarantee us playoffs. None of those things are realistic without a solid #1 G, plain and simple.
If BT is going to pay a price for a big commodity, I'd much rather it be for a starting goalie over a top line RW. In fact, the hole on the 2nd D pairing is a bigger hole to fill (although I think we'll see Stone coming back)
1. #1 G
2. Top 3-4 D
3. Top line RW
In that order, that is what the Flames' priorities should be. I'd love to see OV on the Flames. But I'll be disappointed if that's the ''big move'' made this summer without addressing the other much more important positions first.

Should we be targeting a big RW who is arguably the best goal scorer since Gretzky? Gee I dunno, he's Russian and his team doesn't win in the playoffs so for those irrational reasons I say no.
No brainer to bring him here.
Sorry but I just don't buy the "he doesn't show up in the big games" argument. The stats don't back up it up. The Capitals are a team. Is it inconceivable that perhaps the Capitals are not a well built team (or at the very least as well built as we may have thought)? This isn't basketball. One guy can't win games.
The amount of hard "no's" in this thread is quite surprising. I'm a big Bennett fan but I'd pay for his flight to DC myself if he could get us Ovi.

Its actually hilarious how many people are downplaying Ovechkin here. The guy is the best goal scorer of his generation and certainly a generational talent. At 31 his career is far from over. People would be doing backflips if he came here.

Who said anything about improving the Capitals for the next season? Seriously, in what scenerio does a team place their franchise player on the trade block with the interntions of improving immediately? The only way the Capitals improve without Ovechkin is if they package Ovechkin with another asset to get another star forward like Crosby, McDavid, Laine or Matthews. Or they make a hockey deal for like a defensemen or goalie.
There is no way they replace a 30-50 goal scorer. There is simple no way to replace and improve upon who is the best goal scorer of our generation

Exactly. He can't. So why eat 9.5mil per year for a declining 31 year old?
I get it, he's a great goal scorer. But his age and contract don't make any sense for this Flames team where they currently stand.

Fair we will have to agree to disagree. Ovi has been great and he has a long list of accomplishments but he also has the distinction of not being able to get his team over the hump. He also is past his prime so we can't assume he is going to suddenly bounce back to being a 50 goal guy.
I am very much for trading for him and even taking the full contract on however we can't do that AND give up a young core piece that we as fans had to suffer a long losing season to acquire.
