Honestly, that was the worst offensive effort I've seen this season. The non-response to the hit on Johnny was sickening
|
The has to be some reason the whole team is not supporting Johnny, seems like it's been that way since he signed his contract which he earned the right to do. Maybe there is more to it but there are 29 teams out there who would love to have him on their team.

Least we know we have a legit beast of a player in Tkachuk. He relishes the battle every night. Something I wish the majority of this team did.

I didn't give up on Gulutzan and co earlier in the season, as I figure they were still learning the system etc, but right now It's hard to keep patience. It's obvious our offense is being neutered. We play a possession game. Great. Problem is, we get no quality scoring chances. Always perimeter and then weak shots on net.
|
Except that's not true.
Looking at tonights shot maps Calgary had by far more shots in close. They had 6 or 7 in crease even. Now why they can't score? That I don't know.

I don't want Jankowski or Klimchuk anywhere near Gulutzan.

Honestly, I don't think the system is right for the players we have. GG reminds me of Jacques Martin, who showed zero emotion. Martin's teams were only able to play one way and couldn't change their style at threat of benching. GG has been stubborn in insisting his system is the way they should play. But in order to play that kind of system, you need different players. Good coaches design a system that suits the players they have. I don't think GG can do that. Very sad to see.

Ya all I got is the ducks, and the Canuck 4-1 game. I have many good Tkachuk memorable moments but that's about it.

The teams right behind the Flames are the kings who can't win either and the Canucks who have a brutal road record and have a ton of really tough road games left.
Not saying that means the flames can't be caught, of course they can, but it's not as though if they do, they won't be right in the mix. People are acting like they are 8-9 points out right now.

This team was always going to be in the mix for a playoff spot and you know what, they are. But in the mix means they are going to be a 7-10th ranked team out of 15. And that means peaks and valleys. This is as bad as the start to the season but there's nothing to say they can't pull out of it again.
It's an absolute joke some of you are looking at lottery odds and picks at this point in the season. They're in a playoff spot today. That's not rose coloured glasses, that's just facts.
|
I always appreciate these types of posts. It's legitimately hard to see the positive side after stretches like these.
It's actually pretty funny that the team is still in a playoff spot. Sure doesn't feel like it.

The fact that the team still sits where it does is a testament to how good the Tkachuk/Backlund/Frolik line has been all year.
I'm not a "fire Gulutzan" guy because I've seen some huge strides in a couple areas that were tire fires last year. But the big steps back from some key players is hugely concerning.
Worst of all, Gulutzan talked a lot about the Flames playing an entertaining style of hockey this year and that hasn't been the case. I try not to get too emotionally invested in the team, but it's hard not to be downright pissed off right now.
|
I agree with this.
Gaudreau is really puzzling to me, he doesn't look at all as dangerous or talented as he did the last two seasons. He has taken a considerable step backwards this season and it's very concerning. He straight up looks slower.
Giordano and Brodie are having forgettable seasons as well.
There is just so much dead weight on this team.
Bouma, Stajan, Wideman, Chiasson and Ferland are guys that, are on some nights decent, but just don't contribute enough to warrant NHL jobs.
Wideman had 22 minutes of ice time tonight while Dougie had 17 minutes. That is serious mis-allocation of resources. I don't see what Gulutzan's logic is there.
Gulutzan just doesn't look like he commands much of a presence, or respect. and that's coming from me, a casual hockey fan, i can't imagine what a room of professional hockey players must think. He really just has a weak presence about him. I know that isn't the most detailed, or fair, analysis but that's just how I see it.
