I'm sad to see Jooris go, I wish the Flames would've held onto him but I understand at the same time why they are choosing to move on. I also follow/like the Rangers so I will be tracking his progression this year. I will always remember his first career hat trick against Arizona in that magical 2014-15 season coming out of college.

General rule of thumb : don't get attached to bottom of the roster players. Cutting guys like Jooris loose is the new normal. The old bad management would have clung on to these guys.

The funnest fact is that with limited ice time when he did play and 20 less games played then the players surrounding him Jooris ended up 4th on this team in minor penalties. There was a stretch of 24 games where Bollig only two two minor penalties, do I forgive him for the rest of the year because of that? No, certainly not. Bollig takes bad penalties.

You can forgive (to a degree) guys like Giordano or Hamilton for being high, they're eating up prime minutes against top competition. But for 4th line players, playing very limited roles they can't put their teams to a disadvantage when they do get an opportunity to play. Not with utterly needless hooking and tripping penalties.

I like Jooris, I hope he does well and bounces back with the Rangers, potentially good energy PK forward there but last season was terrible, no ifs ands or buts about it. In a cap world, which the Flames are up against you can't be overpaying these bottom line fringe guys.

I've no opinion on whether it applies to Jooris, but "bad" penalties so so subjective that it's an almost unarguable point. For some it's bad when there is a powerplay coming and you go and unnecessarily even up the sides by giving the extra punch. But to others that's protecting the teammate. To some, it includes extra force when the Flames are pressing in the offensive zone (while to some that's just playing with an edge).

I think any time you play for a team that takes so few penalties (which is a staple of what's kept the Flames from being the worst team in the league the last handful of years despite some pretty dated core systemic concepts) every penalty gets magnified. If you compare Jooris to the average bottom sixer on an average penalty-taking team he's probably... average.

Article today about Jooris & why he's heading to NYR.

“(The Flames) kept me in the loop,” Jooris said. “They told me they liked me and said they’d circle back. But they needed to take care of other things and I was obviously a little bit secondary. It’s tough to fit everyone in … I just wasn’t sure if I was going to fit.

“I saw a great opportunity in New York and just jumped at it.”

“I definitely built amazing relationships in Calgary with the guys and within the organization,” he said. “I was thankful for the opportunity they gave me and I learned a lot as a player. I was able to get my foot in the door and they granted me that opportunity. That was amazing.

“The two years I spent in Calgary were an unbelievable part of my career and part of my life.”
